iPhone USB interface

Still trying to figure out iPhone interfacing with the car through USB.
I have the basic audio that comes with the SV model.
After connecting the iPhone to the USB port, I cycle through the audio source from the steering wheel and land on iPod. It recognizes that something is connected, but I hear nothing. It starts playing once I disconnect and re-connect the USB. Fine. Another issue is that when I trying pushing up and down the steering wheel button to cycle through the tracks, the song does not change. I'm I missing something?

The only time I don't get any sound is if I cycle through, get to Bluetooth mode, keep going, & land on the iPod mode again. To get sound again in the USB/iPod mode I have to disconnect my phone & reconnect it. Another way is to pick wether to play through the docking station or Bluetooth on my phone. To do this quickly, slide the bottom tab on your phone in the up direction when you're in the locked screen. The same one that gives you other options such as to go into airplane mode, or turn on the light.
