Very Faint Whine at Highway Speeds

I just noticed this the other day. I have an '09 with 123k miles.

If Im going say 60 and accelerate pretty hard, I notice a faint whining. It sounds like it's changes with the RPM/"shifting". It seems to be coming from the belly of the car -if that makes sense...not through the speakers or anything like that. Any thoughts on what this could be?

That would most likely be your CVT my good man but you probably already knew that.

What is the history on the cvt maintenance? Should have been changed at least once.

Hopefully you've maintained your cvt per Nissan guidelines. Either way, I'd suggest changing the cvt fluid. When our cvt gets hot/over worked they begin to whine and eventually go into limp mode which will restrict power and speed. In the meantime you should be gentle on the CVT until you can figure out the problem.

I changed the fluid at 90k. The dealer checked it multiple times and it was fine so I changed it within spec. Haven't not done anything else since...I will continue to monitor and post back if anything changes.

Thanks!

My 2010 has 115K miles on it. I have noticed that it does the same thing for the past 20K miles. Even though I changed the fluid about 5000mi ago, it still has that high pitched whine. I only hear it when I hit pedal to floor and it hits red line though. Don't ever hear it any other time. When I first got this car, transmission was 100% silent all the time. It is concerning, but the fluid that came out of it looks too good to be anything major going wrong. Hopefully it is just a normal part of the wear on it???

@corollaulev

Im forced to agree with the other cvt thread about it possibly being the temperature. Its hot here in vegas and i do get the whine after driving it for over 30 mins. Trips to cali are ok, but the whine is present and so is the lack of power. Ive only got 38k miles on my 11 sv and have not done the cvt change yet but its coming up soon. Im curious, did any domestic maximas come with a trans cooler?

ya the trans fluid runs through the engine coolant radiator for cooling. Nissan from what i hear is now installing auxiliary trans coolers for people having slow downs and whines. I took it upon myself to install one of my altima 3.5 cvt and so far no issues. A good test i did with the trans cooler i installed was my car filled with people along with a full trunk..2+ hour drive none stop then towards the end of the trip a long steep climb up a tall bridge. Its so steep theres a warning at the start of the bridge saying to not travel up this bridge on low fuel lol. No slow downs or whines :-) i live in the hot sunshine state of florida.

Any part numbers for the auxiliary cooler? I could have sworn I saw this part once, but now, for the life of me, I cannot locate it again... Can't find it on CourtesyParts.com either, or maybe I'm blind.

I'd like to take a look at it again out of curiosity some time.

I had the same problem and never figured it out. I think I posted a video or two somewhere on this forum and couldn't figure it out. I changed the cvt fuild at 30k and im about to change it again at 50k. Had it checked out at the dealership and they said its just the CVT and that's the way it is :/

The trans cooler is on Ghozt's turbo build thread. It's on like the 3rd or 4th page or so.
