What kind of oil for first oil change?

I'm thinking about doing the first oil change at 1,500 miles on my 2014, since it's a new engine and I want to make sure everything is clean. Maybe it's overkill, but I'm kind of **** when it comes to maintaining my cars. Since it's new, would it be a good idea to use a conventional oil during the first oil change on the 3.5 V6? I have had other vehicles that were factory filled with Mobil1, and I used them since day one. I have heard of older 3.5 V6s having oil consumption issues, but I don't know if the 7th gens experience this. I want to make sure everything seats properly on this engine and I won't have to worry about it.

I'm definitely not using the Nissan ester oil, because I think it's a rip off when other oils out there exceed it's specifications for cheaper. I will use a Nissan oil filter though. What did you all use on the first oil change, a conventional, synthetic blend, or a full synthetic?

I'd like to use Mobil1 since it's always been good in all my other previous vehicles, but how well does it work in the 3.5 V6. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good questions. I'm in the same boat. I've been told that what comes in it is supposedly unknown from the plant. I'm going to change at a 1k with blend and then go full syn by 5k. Supposedly the only things that need to seat nowadays are the rings and their seals and not much else. Will be intersted in the answers get back

I used conventional Castrol GTX 5W-30 for the first 5K miles. I have 117,000 on it now and have never had oil consumption issues. Have used a good quality synthetic since 5K miles. It has been a pretty flawless engine, aside from the documented bad #1 main bearing. I used Castrol Syntec 0W30 until Castrol did away with it.

You really can't go wrong with just sticking with a good conventional oil for the first several thousand miles.

Nissan recommends using Ester Oil (Conventional) in the engine in the owners manual.
My theory is that this oil has slightly more irregularities than synthetic, which helps break in the engine more. Of course, your driving habits also help determine the break in period and quality of break in.

I personally stuck with ester oil at 3750 mile intervals until about 12k, then switched over to Mobile 1 5w-30.
Once I get to higher mileage, probably around 60k, I'll switch to a longer cycle of about 5000 mile or even 7500 miles between oil changes.

As a side note, engine oil changes also depend on your driving style/habits/environments.

New engine break in?

So I should change at 1k with conventional oil then every 3k till 15k with conventional and switch to syn at 15k? I have searched other threads but most deal with older gen cars and this engine is basically the same but it's a half a litre bigger so I would like some 7th gen thoughts!

You do not have to do all that stuff. If your car as already had a couple of oil changes then switch to synthetic if you want to. If your car is new and still running on the original oil wait until that first change is needed then switch over.

If you dealership offers free oil changes for the first half dozen times like mine did, I used that offer regardless of what they put in. Turns out it was Castrol Syn Blend changed every 5000 miles.

There is no set number of changes you have to do with dyno oil before you switch to synthetic oil. Just make sure you use the same API and viscosity ratings stated in the owners manual.

Richard, thanks I do in fact have a brand new car. No freebies were given which is ok because of the deal I got. I have heard about changing at 1k to get particulates out and using conventional for the first 5 or 10 or even 15k miles before making the switch. Just wondering what the pros out there say about the 7th gen break in. Thanks again

Just throw another dino 5-30wt in for 5k miles or so. I switched to synthetic at 30k because of my long intervals.
