help wont rev over 4000 rpm

i have an 09 max sv. recently while on long highway drives it will not rev over 4000 rpm even under wot. this has happened 3 times now. twice on the same road trip (long periods on the highway 80+mph)

now i have a pretty sophisticated scan tool, i pulled the codes and on that trip it had 2 iat (intake air temp) high codes. at this time i had the snorkel off, so i figured that was the problem.

so just to be safe i re-installed the snorkel, new air filter, and cleaned the maf.

fast forward to today, same problem NO cel No trouble codes. new filter and snorkel were both in place. and still the same issue, warm day, long highway drive, wont rev above 4000 even under wide open throttle.

both maf and iat reading seemed reasonable.

max gurus any thoughts?

Your cvt transmission went into "limp" mode. When you push the trans by driving last or at highways speeds for long periods of time the cvt can heat up and as a result limit the cars power to prevent you from further damaging the trans. I'd suggest letting up off of the throttle a bit on long road trips and perhaps getting your cvt fluid replaced. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Also, since you have an 09 you qualify for the cvt warranty for 10yrs/120kmi. If it keeps up and you have less than 120k I'd suggest trying to get a new cvt out of the deal

thanks for the heads up, is that warranty transferable? i am not the original owner. also is that a common issue? is there anything else that can be done about it?

Yes, it is transferable. As for limp mode, it's common with our cars. It's a safety measure built into the system to prevent you from damaging the cvt. it's somewhat common but not a major issue. I am sure someone will chime in on suggestions to prevent the cvt from limping out

I noticed you mentioned you run your car without the snorkel for the air intake? I'm guessing you still have the stock box in place as well? I remember a while ago we had a thread going about the pros and cons of running the stock box without the snorkel and the sound/performance change it made. I wonder how many people are doing this now, and if that had any part to play with your transmission going into limp mode.

Anybody else reading this thread, maybe I should start a poll, but how many of yinz/us are running the stock air intake without the snorkel?

As I have been for about 3000 miles at least.

CVT is going into limp mode. this can be for a couple reasons. 1 common one is your trans fluid is overfilled. another is you're driving pretty hard, and it's hot, and it is going into limp from the temperature.
