Cold idle rpm

I just sold my 1995 Maxima that I bought new and bought a used 2014 Maxima S with 6,000 miles that was a previous rental car. When I first start the car in the morning (engine cold) it idles at about 1,600 RPM, which seems rather high. After a few minutes it goes down to 600-700, which seems normal. I'm concerned that such a high idle before the oil is pumped throughout the engine will eventually cause damage to the engine. Does 1,600 RPM seem high, or do all 7th gen Maximas idle at this speed when cold?

Yeah that's kinda normal. My car usually takes a minute or so to drop all the way down. If your car is taking more time (like 3-4 mins) to drop down I'd say that might be a bit strange. I am sure others will chime in on the subject.

Normal. As long as youre using a good high quality oil, youre fine. The only motto i go by is to allow it to idle for 30 seconds before driving away. Other than that, youre fine.

Normal. I usually wait until the RPM needle drops to 1,000 RPMs or when the temperature gauge starts moving. This is about 1-2 minutes.

I wait a few seconds(30/45?) after the engine turns over than take off. I take it easy until I about a quarter mile is when I reach the intersection for my neighborhood. The engine is warmed up at that point.... I used to idle for a few minutes in the morning but that's just a waste of gas... It will warm up much quicker driving on the brakes...

Just one thing to take into account. The needle on your dashboard is reporting COOLANT temperature. Coolant has a thermostat amd heats up much faster than the oil. I have logged coolant temps as compared to oil temps on warm-up. I personally think ALL manufacturers have screwed up by not putting an oil temp gauge on vehicles. Oil temp lags about 15 minutes behind coolant temps. Start, idle for 30 seconds or so and go is the best thing for your car. If you are renecking the car, you REALLY need to wait about 15 minutes before doing so. Cold oil is thicker oil and doesnt flow as well. If youre real **** about making sure your engine lasts a long time, then be easy for about the first 15 minutes or so....just FYI...

Would an oil temp gauge be a difficult addition?
