Hello everyone,

I'm contemplating between a 2009 maxima and a 2013 nissan altima 2.5sv. The details of the cars are as follows:

1. Nissan Maxima-Clean Carproof No accidents-12500 CAD @ 75000kms
2. Nissan Altima- Clean Carproof No accidents- 13500 CAD @ 83000kms.

Now having gone through quite a few posts, one particular issue seems to stand out and that is the dreaded CVT. I have a few questions which if anyone could help we me with, would greatly be appreciated as it would go towards my decision of purchasing either or as my very first car! ( I just finished my masters in engineering and got a job!)

1. My dad previously owned a 2010 3.5 sr altima sedan and currently a 2014 altima 3.5. He hasnt had any cvt issues so far, even till the point he sold his altima 2010 @ 88000kms. Does the CVT affect only 2.5 models?

2. What is the track record regarding the 09 maxima's CVT?

3. Since im buying this car used from a nissan dealer, will the extended warranty of 10 years/200,000kms transfer over to me or no?

4. which should i get? P.S I'm also looking @ a grand vitara 4wd 2011 @ 70,000kms @ 15000CAD.

VERY CONFUSED! PLEASE HELP!

thanks
adi

The warranty question you will have to ask the dealer, The CVT I have had no problems with it on my 2014 Maxima or my 2004 Maxima. I am a Nissan fan so I would buy the Nissan Altima or Maxima great choices, As for what you should get well your preference is all over a front wheel drive or a 4x4 what are your needs with the car or suv. Which will better serve you

Welcome to the forum!

Used cars are always a bit of a gamble unless you know explicitly how the car was driven and taken care of. This holds true no matter the engine, transmission, brand, etc.

Cars that were Rental Cars new, are probably ones that have been abused the most.

Then comes cars owned by "non-gear heads" as they tend not to know or care about maintenance items until something breaks!

I hate to say this, but younger folks tend to be more "abusive" to their engines and transmissions.

ALL of these are generalities that I have found to be truisms for me. Other's may have different experiences and opinions.

My 09 Max has 323,000 MILES on it with no CVT or engine issues. But others have had issues with their 14 models with a lot less miles on them as well. I can't tell how those cars were used or if they were just infant mortality.

At the end of the day "you pays your money and takes your chances" which is why I buy new. If your old man is a gear-head, listen to him. He has probably been around the block a time or two and made many more mistakes than he will ever admit!!

I know this didn't help much but without seeing the cars, getting under the hood and examining the previous owner records, any advice HAS to be relegated to the generality or personal opinion realm!

Hey im from Canada also. I have the 2010 SV .. I actually like the CVT .. i dont mind it at all. I'm not a street racer or do track. off the line power is great.. passing power is great.. Car looks great..nice materials on the inside.

Lots of aftermarket stuff to make yours unique.

Power n fun and looks.. go for the Maxima
Save on gas... go for the Altima

Get the Maxima! The CVT transmission on the Maxima is the makeshift model for every other model. The Maxima by far has the best transmission out of all of Nissan's makes. 100% the Maxima, and btw, I'm from Canada as well! Cheers eh?
