Rattling noise in cabin (ground wires?)
Rattling noise in cabin (ground wires?)
Hey all,
I have a 2011 Maxima and I needed some help figuring out a rattling noise I'm experiencing. I'll give you all the details and provide more if needed. Really I want to know if the issue is something I should fix on my own or if itll be worth it to shell out the money to take it somewhere to get it professionally fixed.
-The sound started right after I got my car back from a body shop (I had the right side doors repainted after I got swiped from the side. My car did not make this noise or anything similar before I got it back from the shop. The dealer had to take my door apart to assess the damage for insurance, so I'm thinking maybe they didn't ground the wires after the repair, or they yanked some wires loose behind my nav system. When I took it back to the body shop they attributed the noise to taking a door apart and putting it back together and that there was nothing they can do. My repair was also free so I didnt fight them much.)
-It sounds like its coming from behind my nav system and happens when I'm on a bumpy road.
-Sometimes my car makes the noise and sometimes I drive and it doesnt make a peep
-The loudness also varies, sometimes its a light buzz, others you can hear it over full volume music.
The sound is overall very irritating to me and my passengers and I want it fixed asap. Should I just take it to Nissan Service with all of these details, or is this an easy fix?

I found my cabin rattle the first summer I had the car, turns out it was the sunglasses in the holder above the mirror. Yours might be a little more complicated than mine as things weren't taken apart. I doubt very much its loose wires because you would have other issues to the items those wires connected to. The way I would start the hunt would be to removed everything from the car that you put there, empty out the glove box, storage areas, door cubby holes, trunk including jack and tire, every quarter nickel and bobby pin under the seats that could possibly rattle. Hey its a good house cleaning drill anyway. Then go drive with someone else doing the search, at least you will be able to isolate the area in the cabin the rattle is coming from. If all else fails you or the dealership or someone with knowledge is going to have to open things up. Good Luck
