B-Pillar Squeak/Rattle

I've had my '05 SL for just about two weeks now and have about 1250 miles on the car. Everything's been great except for this annoying squeaky rattle that has developed on the upper half of the driver's side B-Pillar. It seems to be coming from right above where the plastic piece meets the headliner on the inside of the pillar. In fact, I can get it to stop by applying pressure to the headliner portion but it comes back when the pressure is released. I only hear the noise when the car goes over moderate bumps but it's very annoying because it's right next to my ear..

Anyone experience this or have a solution? I didn't see any TSB's for this..

TIA

I haven't heard that one, but God knows we have a fair share of unexplained rattles and squeaks that come and go. It sounds like there might be something running through there, but I don't think there's any wiring or anything of the sort over that area -- although I could be wrong.

I say go to the dealership and SIT with them in the car and show them... if not they'll say they can't reproduce the problem and call it a day. Where it is, it sounds like it could be annoying enough though...

Hey before you do anything try this one...if it occurs at takeoff, or when stopping (as it did with mine) try opening the door, holding it away from the body, and applying brakes and starting..to my delight the squeeking noise stopped completely. So I went home, WD40'd the lock, and I used windex to rub down the rubber gasket all theway around, including the metal area of the inner door on the body as well. I was very suprised the sound was completely gone and has not returned. I originally thought it was the pillar, or the seatbelt mechanism, or the windowsill on the door, or something! So 1st i tightened every bolt I could find on the door area, still nothing...It was not until I thoroughly wiped down all the doors contact points to the body and sprayed the lock that the sound was gone, couldnt believe it was that simple. Like I said though, I had a 'creaking' sound right behind my left ear and near my shoulder...everytme the cars weight shifted fore or aft...so when I accellerated or breaked.

Welcome to the B pillar noise club. I too have it and have taken the car into the dealer several times for them to fix it. It's soooo annoying. I don't think it can be fixed because of the airbags. This is one of the many problems I am trying to resolve in court now.

I've got a squeek that comes from the driver-side sun visor...all I did was fold up a tiny piece of paper around the clip (actually the part on the visor that goes into the clip in the headliner) and I guess now the visor doesn't move anymore..and hence..no more squeek. But because I took out the resonator and have bigger pipes under my car, things start squeeking and rattling all the time now. Currently I've got the gauges rubbing against the dash at one frequency...the pillar next to me at another frequency etc.

Basically...for every gear, I've got a different squeek!

Then My car is as quiet as a cathedral compared to some...this was my only really annoying squeek, and a good wipe down stopped it. One other very minor one is that the shifter cover (the chrome part) buzzes slightly at certain times...I can stop it by pushing on it while im driving...and a perm solution to it would be wedging something under it...but it rarely becomes noticeable.

Thanks for all the input guys. I spent some more time looking at the problem area yesterday and noticed a few things.

Opening the door did not cause the noise to go away. I really was hoping this would be the problem as I had suspected it might be that from the beginning but no dice.

Also, I now notice that the noise doesn't start up until part way into my daily commute. It's almost as though whatever it is that's shaking around to cause the noise requires some bumps/vibrations before it works itself into a position that causes the noise. Also, along the same lines, the noise can be more consistent or very rare from one drive to the next. Yesterday, on my home from work, it was happening almost constantly while cruising on a relatviley smooth highway. Today, it only happened when I went over significant bumps...

Is there any way to get behind the B-pillar? I might be able to get some more insight on this if I could see how things are put together back there...

Maybe I was lucky then...I was really suprised I stopped it with what I did.

I had the same issue with my passenger side clip. It was too large for the metal bar in the sunvisor that goes into it to fit properly. Get a new one from the dealer. Takes a couple minutes to change. Or do the paper trick like you did. Some people have done it with electrical tape too for a clean look.

This is wild. My 04 SE with 35K miles has all rattles listed in this post. I have identified the passenger side visor noise. I am still unable to solve the B-pillar noise however.
