Hello! Need some experienced advice! MAF issues?
2013 Maxima S 148000 miles. No problems this far until it stalled in traffic and then jerked and ran rough on the way home. Took to mechanic. He replaced Mass Air Flow Sensor. This worked for a couple of months and same problem occurred. Check Engine light is on. He again replaced MAFS. Left shop and within same day it died while I was in town at about 40 mph coasted into turn lane and made it into a parking lot. Cranked back died and cranked again and I got home. They did mention they did not replace with original sensor both times??? Said they had to order it? I will have to call them Monday morning because I go back to work Thursday. Any advice? Synthetic oil changes as due. Use Shell gas. I take good care of my Maxima but I bought it with barely 100000 miles. One day after this repair I thought I heard it clatter when I took off. Scared me because as a teen I drove a car hot and you never forget that clatter!
I believe Nissan has to update the ECU system after a new MAF sensor has been put in or else it will fail on you prematurely, I know someone who replaced the MAF sensor and they had to take it to Nissan to flash the ECM. I would also stick with OEM on the MAF sensor if at all possible. You can get away with aftermarket on certain components but with anything involving sensors that the ECM has to monitor it's always best imo to go with OEM.

I've never had it done for anything I've changed out in my Maximas, But when I stopped by my buddies garage he was working on a 7th Gen Maxima and the guy that owns the car was there and he said he changed out the MAF sensor and had problems so they recommended he take it to Nissan and Nissan then told him he needs to update/reflash the ECU. Now was that exactly what happened? That I can't answer I'm just giving advice from something I've heard pertaining to MAF sensor. I could very well be wrong here but just trying to assist, any info and ideas helps.

You always have to explore your options before a random shop put random crap in your car so you're not completely not at fault.
Cowgirl and I am very chill, not a random shop, the above comments confirmed what I originally thought that I needed to tell them to use the OEM part! But thank you for all our assumptions as if you know me.
By the way, to help you further (since this is my sole intention), buy the sensor yourself, and hand it to them so they install it for you.
I don't need to know anything about you (but only within the context of your inquiry), if I was close I would have put it in your car for free, in under 15 min.
Lessons learnt.

This may be anectodal but are you running an oil based air filter like a K&N? If you are, there is a high chance of having more MAF issues in the future as a lot of reported MAF failures have been related to being fouled by the oil. I have over 430,000 miles on my 09 and just use a bit of maf cleaner every 100,000 or so and have never had an issue. Keep the filters changed regularly and you should get another 500,000 miles before you experience this issue again.

For those thinking of doing this cleaning, please remember these are VERY sensitive devices. Use only quality MAF cleaners like CRC (dont use carb cleaner) and remove the MAF before spraying it and make sure it is Completely dry before reinstallation. Dont touch it with your fingers. No compresed air either.
Hey - How did this end up?
Just offering my recent experience. I also got an aftermarket MAF for what seemed like a MAF issue (Lean codes) but after replacing the MAF, i found a big rip in the vacuum hose from PCV to the intake on the backside of the engine. This hose had a 1 inch hole in the back side that you can't see because it was on the backside facing the fire-wall. Replaced the hose and then the MAF started throwing a P0101 code, so i put the original MAF back in and after 2 days, no problems. Just putting this out there for people having similar issue.
I think those comments about either using the OEM Nissan part or having it reprogrammed is most likely the correct solution for those replacing the MAF.
