Rumbling, humming, vibration

Hey all. 103k miles. The car has been doing fine in general. I've drained (not flushed) and replaced the CVT fluid twice. The second time it came out looking like new after 30k miles. I change the motor oil and filter twice a year (5k miles per change).

I have two sets of tires and wheels. One for the northeast winter, one for the rest of the year. Both sets are high quality tires, quiet, low mileage, and well balanced.

Recently I started hearing sounds that sound kind of like driving over a road that has been ground up in prep for new asphalt. All speeds. Start to hear it at approx 10 mph. Not while car is idling. Like a rumbling, humming, with some vibration in the gas pedal as well. Does this on the smoothest roads with both sets of tires/wheels. On the highway at highway speeds, when the trans is put into neutral there is no change, still the ruckus. No shaking of the steering wheel. MPG has not dropped from my usual 25 combined city highway. I've done a basic test of the wheel bearings by rocking each wheel while off the ground, they all seem tight.

So I'm stumped so far. Possibly CV axle? Maybe it IS the ball joints or wheel bearings. Sound familiar to anyone?

You are on the right path. Probably a wheel bearing.

Bificus, Les,
Both front wheel bearings needed to be replaced, and were. I have always done plenty of repairs and maintenance myself on my cars, but this time I had an excellent pro mechanic look everything over. I didn't want to miss any issues. I had him replace the bearings as well as the front struts and rear shocks. Also full wheel alignment. So smooth and quiet now it really does feel like a different car. I had been slowly getting used to the noise, vibration, and rough ride.
Next, I will be replacing the spark plugs and rear bearings myself.
Any good threads on these two repairs?
Thanks.
Mike
