Limp Mode 2011
Limp Mode 2011
I have a 2011 Maxima with 160,000 miles. I went to change the oil 3 weeks ago before a trip a 1,100-mile round trip to Ohio from NJ. The tech suggested changing the trans fluid also as it was black. I stated it was not a good idea from what I had been told in the past. He said, the transmission was good and there would be no problem. I drove to Ohio and back without a problem. However, a few days after I returned, I went 80 miles in 95* F weather to the beach house. When I went to return home a few hours later, it was now 99* f. After driving 10 miles or so, I pulled over to a local store and left my car running with A/C on. Was in the store for about 10 -15 mins. When I returned to the car and put it in gear. No power no rev, it went to limp mode. I shut it off and tried to start it, but no crank just a clicking sound. So I had it towed home a 2-hour trip. When we arrived the tow truck driver jump-started it and drove without a problem for the week. Until I was stuck in traffic on a hot day. It went into limp mode again. I took it to a local mechanic he said there were transmission error codes. He reset them and told me to drive it it lasted 2 hours and limp once again. he said the trans is shot. I said there is no slippage and it changes gears. He said, "that's the way these transmissions are". I took it for a second opinion. This mechanic said, he got a u0164(lost communication with HVAC Control Module) error code. So which is it? Can someone please help me?
Really sounds electrical to me. Lost comm, battery dieing, limp mode...did you get your electrical system checked? I would guess that alternator and/or battery is toasty. I have had these symptoms each time my alternator failed.
I would also do a drain and fill and replace the external cvt filter too. That is a lot of miles to go without trans service. If you go that route, make sure you use genuine NS2 fluid from Nissan. I do mine every 60,000 miles and have a bit over 450,000 miles so far with the original transmission.
Do let us know your progress!

But still think you have an electrical issue. Best of luck and do let us know what is done to resolve your issue.

I am with @LtLeary on this. I can't tell from reading your post that your CVT fluid was changed.

Sorry, didn’t want to come off combative.
However, what I was trying to say is before I changed the Trans fluid at Jiffy, I had no problems with the car. There was always a minor electrical twitch, which showed in the headlights flicking high to dim before, which would go away after it warmed up. However, it never stopped the car from performing.
