CVT Filter 2009 350Ti

Other members talking about the external filter for the CVT transmission. Part number 31726-1XE0A. Australian Nissan dealer has no such part or description listed. Can anyone tell me the Australian part number or do I just need to order it from another country?

Not sure why Australia would have a different PN but the description here in the US is oil filter. Not cvt or transmission filter. Just because i am curious, do you even have the filter in the drivers side wheel well like the US version?

Thanks for responding. Since Nissan dealership in my home town told me that part number is not for my car I also asked myself the same question. While I was under the car draining the cvt box I looked up in the place where this filter was shown from others pics and sure enough it was there. I called back Nissan the next day and they said to get the part number directly off the filter which I could not do because I am now away from home for a couple of weeks. Pretty sure when it comes down to it it will be the same part number but to be sure I will visually check the part before ordering it.

There is a disconnect between the forum info and Nissan info. But thanks for the link anyway. For info sake the price dealership gave me for the part was AUD $129. Hard to find a better price once currency exchange and freight are considered.

Guven how widely this filter appears to be used I was surprised it could not be found significantly cheaper in Australia than the $129 from dealer. USD $39 was best price I could otherwise find which once converted inc freight was too close to the same price to be worth it. Nissan NS-3 best price AUD $66 For 4 litres was good but freight prices brought it back up to dealer price of $84. Interested to hear if anyone has been able to do much better than those prices? ( yes I am a penny pincher)

Amazon!

I was able to find the external CVT filter on Amazon for around $75. i usually just use Valvoline's CVT fluid but will be switching to Amsoil.

Do let us know how the valviline/amsol route works for you. I havent seen any high mileage posts with anyone going that route so am curious.

I purchased it used at 70,000. 2009 SV. I've changed the fluid pretty religiously every 15k. I have 163,000 now. Valvoline fluid every time and am just now considering changing the filter as it is getting older. No lights on dash, drives great, and we will die together if I have it my way! Just been hearing good things about the Amsoil fluid is all.

Filter definitely there. Number not readable. Have ordered it anyway as 31726-1XE0A increasingly frustrated with local dealer as part identification and delivery time estimations seem like I am asking the impossible. I believe there is a filter or strainer in the gearbox. Does anyone know the part number?

31728-29x0d. But that is just the strainer. Not the gasket or bolts (yes, the fsm calls for replacing the pan bolts after dropping the pan.)

Gasket is on its way at AUD$60.
Wow to replacing pan bolts. Thanks for letting me know but I will inspect pan bolts and re use if they look OK. I will remove pan and see if strainer is a serviceable item. Clean, blow it out and reuse. Dealer could not even confirm there was a strainer there by looking at the exploded diagram. I will put 2 more 4 litres of NS-3 through it over the next four weeks and hopefully I never hear a peep out of what is a smooth running cvt at 173000 km.

Close up of black sludge around pan magnets. Fitted new external filter and have cleaned pan out. Also removed and cleaned valve body strainer and refitted. I will remove once again when pan gasket turns up. Will also put my 3rd 4 litre tin of NS-3 tranny fluid through it after changing gasket. Original gasket looks good for multiple pan removals so $60 new gasket will only be used at final clean and replacement. Anyone know the torque settings for valve body strainer bolts and pan?

Pics for those interested. Black sludge in pan after pan removal.

The pan is 8.1nm or 72 inch lbs. Not seeing the strainer torque specs.

7th gen Maxima (your 2009) should call for NS2 Nissan CVT fluid why NS3?
Though aftermarket fluids seem to not care as they list both NS2 and NS3 in their compatibility list.

NS-3 is back compatible and I suppose one could argue it meets higher specifications than NS-2. Besides that it is what the local Nissan dealer supplied me for about AUD $78 per 4 litre can.

I have a reference Nissan strictly calls for NS2 for 2009 to 2014 Maximas even though NS3 has been there for several years. The language they use is clear they do not want NS3 in these CVTs.

http://www.nissantechnicianinfo.mobi...vice_Tips.html

Notably:
"NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-2 (“green fluid”) – applies to all Nissan vehicles equipped with a CVT built prior to 2013. Use NS-2 green fluid to service these vehicles.New, unused service replacement CVTs may have some residual “blue” NS-3 fluid. However, these service replacement CVTs should be filled with NS-2 green fluid. No draining is necessary."

ok noted and thank you. When I questioned the local dealer he just said it is back compatible. I will take it up with them. Appreciate the info. I will be very pissed off if they have stuffed this up.

Phoned dealer and they insist NS-3 is the current cvt fluid for that car. Rang a different dealer in Brisbane (Capital of Queensland) they agreed NS-3 listed for my car. I mentioned the Nissan technical note and they still said NS-3. Local Nissan dealer said they cant get NS-2 anymore. Wondering if an old note and it was issued to make sure all stocks of NS-2 used up first?

My opinion: Because they don't have NS2
When I visit dealership, I ask for NS2. I wouldn't ask what CVT fluid suits my Maxima 2009. It's also written everywhere you look inside the hood in bold fonts. As well as service manuals and Owner's manual.

Unless something big happened with CVT fluid formulation, which I honestly doubt.

Anyway, aftermarket cvt fluids (like Valvoline and Amsoil) list both on their certifications and approvals. Meaning you might me fine with either.

NS3 has lower viscosity (lower cSt at 100c).
