Steering Rack Change

Almost 100k miles on Maxine now. The OG steering rack finally took a crap. Found a very helpful video to change it out. For a new rack and tie rod ends was about $290. Total time, different days waiting for the parts, 3 hours to remove and about 2 to re-install.

You will need to take off the exhaust without a lift. Anyways below is the video link.

I've dropped my subframe so many times in the last 3 months that I could swap this damn steering rack in the dark lol sigh... mine is still good knock on wood.

I'm coming up on 200k miles and no steering rack problems, what were some of the signs that told you the rack was going bad? I'm trying to keep my car on the road for many more years to come.

slide up under car to the subframe and shine a flashlight where the rack is positioned and look over for any leaks

shudder of the steering wheel on slight turns, followed by reservoir showing low

i love that video and maybe if II found it 2 years back, that would have been a DIY at home

Ok, good reminder. I fortunately have access to a lift, so I get under all my vehicles on a regular basis looking for leaks, torn boots, and early signs of rust that I spray with a rust neutralizer. I'll be checking my truck and the Maxima this weekend in fact just before the weather gets too cold here in Missouri.
