When replacing my timing chain and guide on my 2009 Maxima S, I forgot to mark my chain position or put it at top dead center. I see different videos out there of how to set the cam position by using the chain colored links, by using the mark on the intake cam, etc. Problem is that when I put the chain links in the recommended spots, the notch in the cam is not in the proper spot on top with the same angle as the cylinder bank and is not pointing to the mark on the timing cover. The current positions also do not show the oval markings in the correct position on the inside between the two gears. With my version of the cam gear setup I don't have the same dowel marks that would make it so much easier. I would not think that the cam chains were put on incorrectly from the factory but it appears to be the case. Once I get the cam positions correct, I can rotate the crank, put on the chain and adjust as needed. I am definitely trying to get this correct without taking the valve covers and timing gears off. I am assuming the grooves on the sprockets are from wear, correct? Engine has 233k miles.
I have attached photos that show where the colored links are compared to the position of the cam gear. RH bank showing double link parallel with cylinder angle. RH bank showing single link behind intake cam gear parallel to cylinder angle. Position of intake cam gear with chain marks parallel to the cylinder angle. RH bank aligned by marks, not chain
