Actually they have them for $39k right now. $6k off. And those are the ones with Signature and Tech package which has more than the Maxima.

I am at a loss to know how many more options the base Genesis has than the Platinum. Remember to compare only the bottom line Genesis, because the bottom line Genesis will leave the lot for about the same price as the Platinum. The top line Genesis is over $50,000, and in the true luxury category.

EDIT - And I am surprised you did not like the way it drives. The magazine/press testers were quite impressed with the ride, how it smoothed bumps, how it avoided the front end pitching down during braking, how it stayed level in turns, etc, etc. Were you perhaps on a poorly maintained road, where only something plush like a Buick would soften the ride? The mag testers were particularly impressed with the way this new Maxima took curves at speed.
It didn't dive for sure, but if the car can't talk to me when I am driving it with feedback through the steering, like a Z would, then, it isn't sporty enough for me. Heck, the Genesis did better in that area. The Chevy SS however was the best. I am still considering it, but at the moment, it's in 3rd place on my list.

I do think I saw two testers who mentioned that the steering was 'lighter' than they prefer. I think that is a result of slightly over-assisted steering, and maybe what you noticed with this car. I don't mind light steering, but realize there are folks who do, as they like to feel exactly what the road is like underneath them. That is an area where the 'near-luxury' of the Maxima understandably moves somewhat away from what we knew the Maxima to be until around a dozen years ago.

EDIT - We also need to be comparing similar vehicles in cost, purpose and style. The Genesis tested by Consumer Reports had an MSRP of $52,450, while the SS listed at $47,745, and had a combined MPG of (gulp) 17 MPG. The Maxima tested was around $33K, and the entire Maxima lineup falls between around $32K and around $40K.
