Where do the maps come from?

Has anyone figured out where the nav maps come from and what maps are included?? Will we no longer get probing mail and emails to do a map update at $xxx.xx cost?? My 7th gen had an HDD system but not sure about the 8th - thanks for the replies...

maps are via an SD card. hopefully we can just put them in a computer to update it instead of those awful cd's.

Seriously? They're on an SD card and not in the car's onboard memory?

No, if you look at the radio to the right of where you insert the cd there is a cover that says "SD" on it. That is where your maps are stored. Not to many people use CDs much any more so you probably never payed it any mind.

Why is that bad? I actually like it better than having it stored on the on board.

Per user manual, this is where you order updates from.

You can't update the 2016 maps yet (I assume there isn't one yet) but the 2015 Altima update is $149.00 and it looks like they just send you a new SD card to put in. Pretty pricey but from what I've seen all other car nav updates are the same price or more (the Lexus update is $210).

Or you can go to ebay and pick one up for $50.....

what version of maps do people have? I'm not in my car but I think under info there was a navigation section which told me i was running 2013-2014 maps. Was a little surprised by that.

I assumed the system could read faster from am onboard hard drive than from an SD card. I could of course be wrong. On top of that, I just assumed everyone used hard drives now.

I'll have to check the wife's Altima and see if it's the same.

Solid state will almost always be faster than a physical moving hard drive. Not to mention much more reliable. If the Hard Drive fails, good luck gaining access to it, whereas a SD card, just pop it out and replace.

I think Nissan did a great job of switching from a magnetic hard disk to a solid state SD card.

It's too bad that we can't use Connect via SXM to download it via satellite...

Anyone? I think you hit menu option info. Scroll one screen to the right and then select navigation info (or something like that).
