Internal power questions

For some reason my Maxima will just keep my cellphone charged at the current level when it was plugged in while I am using it. If I leave it alone it takes about 1 hour for every 3% increase. IS THIS NORMAL?

Also is there a way to have constant power for the cigarette lighter plug in the console? My last car 2015 Chrysler 200 had constant power on that one and another one on the passenger side of the car that would shut off when the car was off.

The USB ports aren't strong enough to charge these new smart phones. And no it is all tied in to the ignition.

I don't remember ever seeing a vehicle that had constant power to the cig lighter as it not sensible.

Also the USB has a capacity of 5v across the board, the amperage from a USB port from the vehicle is about 0.5 amps, whereas the connector you plug in the wall pushes nearly 2 amps. Do you have the phone screen on when your phone is plugged in? It seems that you're use of the phone and the small charge of the phone cancels out.

I have just recently noticed a problem with my builtin USB ports inability to charge my Nexus 6P. When I first got my car/phone, I have had no problem charging the phone from these ports. But something changed recently. Now, the phone actually loses charge despite being plugged in.

Last night I did a little test and bought a cigarette lighter USB adapter and plugged my phone into it instead. Using the Ampere app on my phone, I confirmed that this latter method of powering the phone provides 3-4x more current than the USB ports do.

I plan to have my dealer look at this, because something is definitely wrong.

There is nothing wrong read the comments above the usb ports can not handle giving that much power. Also if it is a Micro C cable you run the risk of frying the usb or blowing fuses.

Hi,
I had the same issue, my previous Caddy ATS had always-on power provided to the lighter and USB ports. Not so in my Max.

I had DSP installed with my stereo upgrade, and while they were in the console it is a trivial matter to connect the lighter to an unswitched power source -- and now I can leave my phone charging in the car when I get out.

However, great power requires great responsibility (pun intended). In this configuration, it *is* possible to run down your car battery by leaving something on that charger for days (like a week at the airport?). SO, don't do that

Now if I could only figure out how to get the stereo to stay on when I shut the car off... I hate it that I can't continue listening to the stereo without having to recycle the power button and wait for the darn system to reboot.
Never have I had a car that did THAT foolishness.

Cheers

I saw a guy who installed USB ports in the bottom of the cubby where the data porta are. He talked into the cigarette lighter in the console. Looks easy to do.
