Apple CarPlay

Nissan announced this week that the 2017 maxima will have apple CarPlay. Does anyone know if an update to the 2016 will be made?

Most of the time, the answer is no.

There is hope as Hyundai announced that they are releasing an update to expand to additional Hyundai vehicles. So hopefully Nissan will follow once out.

I also have hope. Considering the release mentioned that Android Auto would be coming soon after to Nissan Connect. Considering the '16 and '17 run the same infotainment unit/system and that adding Android Auto would have to be an OTA type update even to '17s it would stand to reason that adding to '16s would be easy enough.

And if they don't, I'll swap out the entire damn system!

I wouldn't mind Apple Carplay being added to my car. However if they don't, it won't bother me too much as I can do pretty much all the things I need the way it's setup now: play music, receive phone calls, send/receive texts via SIRI, send/receive phone calls through BT.

I hope that Nissan will release an update to our 16s Maxima to have the AirPlay features. I would love to run the maps on my phone as it's much better than the one already there.,

I spoke to Nissan through live chat and the representative said I should reach out to consumer affairs. Detailed in the following screenshot. I intend on calling today. Encourage everyone else to do the same.

I think the SD Card can be used for possible updates other than the Maps. Hopefully some good hackers out there will be able to help us.

Called the number and was basically told that consumer affairs couldn't help and that they would transfer me to my local dealership. FAIL

I have sent an email to Nissan Canada to voice my concern and hope that this software will available to current owners.

There be a software update it. If not I'll drop the money for a new head unit.

I know not everyone is an Apple supporter, but if we don't let Nissan know we are dissatisfied that we, 2016 Maxima owners, are not getting any update, we all lose.... Maybe android auto in 6 months as well.

I've already called Nissan consumer affairs, but they said they have no info wether or not 2016 nissan maxima owners will get an update to apple carplay. Though they did not pass me off to the dealership.

You need to ask to file a formal complaint. Which is what I did.

Just received a nice phone call from nissan customer service over my email i sent for car play. After a little complaining about not having up to date maps or an option for car play. They offered me a service and parts credit, so i will wait and see if its a true credit as there is a 4 to 6 weeks lead time to receive it. So it pays to complain lol.

Thumbs down From Nissan:

Thank you for contacting Nissan North America regarding your concern with your 2016 Nissan Maxima. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you.

In reference to your inquiry, there is no upgrade available at this time. Although the IT system look similar to past model years the upgrade to CarPlay is more than just a firmware update.

The upgrade would require:
1. New Head Unit
2. New Map Lamp with HD microphone
3. New USB port
4. Several WIRING Harnesses to accommodate new H/U, USB and HD microphone

Be advised that a review of our system indicates the vehicle with the Vehicle Identification Number listed above is involved in the campaign as follows:

2013-16 - Maxima, Altima, Rogue, Murano OCS Reprogram

Please contact your Nissan Dealer for an appointment to have the campaign repairs performed on your vehicle. These repairs are free of charge to you.

Meh...i'm good with the way the car is now. It does everything I need and BT plays all my music wirelessly and receive my messages on the vehicle. Due to having apple watch and iPhone, i can simply use the voice command (as it would be done anyway on Car Play) to make calls, texts or play songs through my existing system.

I'm not understanding. Was this an email from Nissan back to you?

It appears they say the upgrade is not available but then go on to outline contacting Nissan to schedule an appointment? And further detail that its free.

I find the list of items needed for the upgrade hard to believe. Considering Hyundai was able to do this as an OTA upgrade.

Sorry. Still not following.

What recall?

And isn't the message he detailed specifically talking about CarPlay?

ETA: please ignore. This is the airbag recall. Got it! Sorry.

I got my recall taken care of and also asked to see if the new head unit was on sale yet. At this point it wasn't listed probably due to the fact they have't released the 2017 Maximas yet, but when they do I am sure it will then be available.

I would definitely like to know if the new head unit resolves the issue of not staying on during the switch from 'on' to 'acc' modes. If so, that may be the impetus for many of us to push Nissan for a head unit replacement.

The 7th gen head units stayed on when you switched from 'on' to 'acc' (if you cycled though the modes fast enough). No disruption, unlike the current gen head units. Highly annoying.

I still think that the more we complain, they might change their mind. We gotta keep complaining. I've been trying to post to the Nissan Facebook page. I don't have any other social media like Twitter or or snapchat, etc... If anyone can post complaints on how Nissan is only upgrading to Apple car play because of how horrible Nissan Connect is and leaving all the 1st year 8th gen Maxima owners behind... Maybe they'll finally do something.

Its not a sw issue, its hw. They are not gonna switch out everyone's head unit.
