Replacing a Missing Key

I just bought a used 2017 Maxima SV. The used car dealership only provided me with one key fob. I ordered a "supposedly" OEM key fob from Ebay and now I have to have it programed to our car. I've been told that the local authorized Nissan Dealerships are not likely to program a key fob that they have not sold themselves, and the two automotive locksmiths that I have contacted have told me the same thing. They will only program keys that they have sold themselves. I'm just curious if anybody has bought a replacement key from a Nissan dealership and if so, what the cost was? I know they can be very pricey. Thanks

I bought a third key fob from Ebay and the dealer programmed it for free as part of my purchase agreement. It took them about 15 minutes and it works like a charm. I keep it hidden in the vehicle (w/o battery) for use in an emergency. I have a key for the door, an El cheapo from wal mart, hidden under the vehicle.

Purchased from here:

I just recently purchased a 2016 Coulis red Platinum Maxima that only cam with one key/transponder (Key 2). I bought two refurbished key/transponders on E-bay for $49 each. I called my locksmith at a local flea market and they cut both blank keys and programmed both transponders for $10. So about $100 for both replacement sets of keys. I was a little apprehensive since I only paid $10 but both new keys work perfectly just like the key that came with the car.

Something I learned recently is that if you finance a car with the assistance of a dealership, the lien holder will often tell the dealership to send them one of the two keys. They do this in case the the car ever needs to be repossessed. So, you should always make it part of the negotiation that you get two keys. The dealer will almost certainly eat the cost of a new key as opposed to losing the sale.

Not a foolproof strategy really. All you need do to disable the other key is to reprogramme the one with you.
The re-possessor could of course gain access into the car with the mechanical key, but he'd have to either reprogramme the key to start the car there or tow the car away..

maybe high risk loans on used cars. I would say this is not something that happens "often"
