Just picked up a 2016 - Where should i start on maintenance?
Hi all,
I just picked up a nice and shiny red 2016 s with 34k miles on it from a local Nissan dealer and so far i'm absolutely loving it. Its CPO but we all know dealers don't necessarily checkout cars or perform all the maintenance they were supposed to. I've been reading a few threads here and there but figured i'd start my own!
What would you guys recommend for things to checkout and verify on the car? Like should i check a certain part to make sure it doesn't have this well known defect etc..
With 34k miles and assuming crappy maintenance what should i be doing? Oil / filter are first on my list but is there anything else i should be looking at?
Few things right off the bat that i've seen already:
* Filled up the gas tank, the pump shut off when the tank was only 3/4 full. Odd... but i'll see if it happens again next time.
* The dealer said the tires were inspected at 33 psi but the car just warned me this morning that they are actually at 26PSI.
* When stepping on the gas after being off the gas at low speeds there appears to be a moment where the transmission actually kicks in. I'd normally say this is the torque converter but it seem odd in a CVT. Its barely noticeable though so maybe its just a thing this car does.
This is my first Nissan so i'm not too sure about the common knowledge Nissan things that some people may be aware of. I've been working on cars all my life and been mostly in the subaru / toyota / ford world.
Here's whats on my todo list already:
* Swap out the deck with a 2017 so i can get carplay
* Get the car polished a fresh shine because it looks like whoever had it before washed it with sandpaper.

As Rick Smith pointed out, the maintenance schedule is a good benchmark. Have you asked the dealer to pull the old service records? Check for any outstanding recalls and I would make sure you change out the brake fluid. Nissan says do this every 20,000 miles. Have the cabin filter changed along with the engine air filter. Check your spare to be sure it is pumped up too. I like your idea of a pro detail on the paint. Sounds like you have a dark color as well. Good luck and report back to us on your progress.
One of these should be in your glovebox. The Nissan Maxima Service and Maintenance Guide.

Nissan should have provided you a copy of the CPO document which states everything they checked and went through (http://cpo.nissanusa.com/userdata/11..._checklist.pdf). I would definitely let them know that the tire pressure was out. I'd also suggest checking the brake pads. If it's less than 50% left, they are suppose to replace them.
I'm curious - are the tires new? Those should be replaced if under 5/32".

I've had trouble with the fuel tank taking a consistent amount. I usually fill as the low fuel light comes on, and it has taken anywhere from 13.5 to 16 gallons at that point. Some of my calculated fuel economy numbers bear out the inconsistency.
Brake fluid is usually overlooked. It is a natural moisture attractant so Nissan calls this service out for 20000 miles.
We recently looked at a CPO Sentra for my son, and I thought the Nissan CPO program was one of the weaker ones. If I remember correctly, it was basically a 7 year/100k powertrain warranty (starting with the original purchase date) with roadside assistance. It certainly wasn't as appealing as the Hyundai program.
What does the Nissan Certified warranty cover?
A: The Nissan CPO 7-Year/100,000 Mile Limited Warranty lasts 7 years from the original new car in-service date of the vehicle or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, and covers over 600 components including engine, transmission and drive train.
