electric power steering pump noise / whine fix
electric power steering pump noise / whine fix
I used to be over on the 4th gen maxima forum but now am over on the Murano forums but I still read the 7th and 8th gen maxima stuff. this applies the 8th gen maximas (or any nissan electric power steering pump cars) as well. fyi, there's a Nissan technical service bulletin about this, ntb16-023, where they reference putting on a thin rubber type insulator on the end of the motor pump housing. I was gonna buy it and just put it on myself but I could only find the part for ~$40! that seemed way to much for something that they should be giving out gratis. I has some big thick rubber washer type things and one was nearly an exact fit. at 3/8" thick, its much thicker than the Nissan part (which I estimate at ~ 1/16"ish. its' od is 3-5/16" and id is 1-13/16"; though +/- a 1/16" or an 1/8" shouldn't be an issue. some adhesive put onto the rubber washer and stuck it onto the end of the pump housing; it worked well for me as I have no more whine!
your welcome. that whine really bothered/annoyed me at times and when I saw the tsb, I figured if it worked that it could benefit lots of folks so after my diy fix worked I posted in the places I read. i'm kinda curious if Nissan now puts this "fix" onto their new electric steering pumps at the factory or if they've worked in an internal motor fix? the 4th gen forum was very helpful to me so I try to give back when I come upon something of interest/importance. even though i'm in muranos now, I continue to read the 7th & 8th gen max stuff as there seems to be more maxima people doing stuff on their own cars than Murano people. maybe just more maximas out there or maybe maxima people tend to tinker more?
I heard my whine even just idling. this fix seemed too simple/easy to me when I saw the Nissan tsb...how could a thin little rubbery washer thingy stop that incessant whine, but my diy thick rubber washer definitely eliminated my whine. I thought it would just reduce it to a non-annoying level but was surprised that it totally eliminated it.
keep in mind, I haven't seem the Nissan part so maybe it's not rubber/just rubber or is some type of cld (constrained layer dampener with like butyl & aluminum or etc.) but my extra thick rubber washer has worked great.

Its the sometimes simple refinements that contribute to our overall satisfaction. Many of us have also chased creaks and rattles, added sound-proofing where we can to make things even better. service bulletins often get overlooked so that's why collectively we all can help each other.

I used a self adhesive anti skid furniture pad from the hardware store.

Just slap it on the end of the housing? It’s that easy?

Thank You
TYSM for this…it helps calm the storm, so to speak. I’ve reread your paragraph over & over….I have a lengthy story I suppose but just know that it has helped me enormously. Again thank you. ❤️
