Low rpm rattle and at speeds

What’s up everyone. Need help here. Check out the rattle in this video. It’s low rpm around 30 mph but I can also hear at speeds. Dealership checked it out and said it’s normal but it wasn’t this bad when I rode with tech. I think it might be a cvt throttle body but not sure. Any input is super appreciated. Dealership checked the heat shields and said they’re good.

still looking for some feedback on this. I left the car again with nissan and they contacted their tech line. the tech line says this is a normal characteristic of the 2017 maxima. I drove another 2017 maxima and I was able to slightly reproduce the issue but not nearly as loud and annoying as what you see in the video I posted. The sound is equivalent to the sound you get from a fan hitting a fan shroud, maybe a bad belt tensioner (although i don't think that's the issue), or a dang blender under the hood at half speed, LOL. Any feedback would really help. Maybe this is CVT drone at its worse? IDK

How sure are you about the belt tensioner? Did you have that noise and then fix it with a new tensioner?

Wow. Just logged in to post about a similar noise with my 2016 SL. Level isn't as high as a loose heat shield or exhaust part. Most evident at lower speeds. Not all the time and not just when accelerating. Asked my mechanic to check underneath car when it was on the lift, and he didn't find any mechanical issues.

Welcome to the mystery. My hope is that someone has had this issue and knows what the resolution is.

Just picked up my car on Thursday. At about 1300 rpm and and speed under 45 I have the same thing... Maybe a little more tinging ( sounded like a heat shields to me) goes back to the dealership soon maybe I can get us all answers.

I have the noise. Going to get it fixed next week. It was posted on the Facebook page for 8th gens with a video. Guy got it fixed. Belt tensioner was the culprit. Only low speeds about 5-30 mph after that it's gone. Also if you get off the accelerator around those speeds I bet it stops too right?

Yea. I read that one. I sent the guy a PM of my video showing him the noise to see if that’s what he had. Haven’t heard back from him yet. Were you able to find that Facebook post?

it's the Belt tensioner
Open the hood while the engine is running
and you will see the tensioner rattling

I've ordered a new tensioner. I'll install and let everyone know if this resolves it. If anyone else gets if fixed, let us know!

Yea please let us know if that resolves it! Funniest thing happened to me on my way home from work...this EXACT sound reared its ugly head. Luckily I had remembered reading your thread about a low rpm rattle and its the same exact thing you posted in the video. I noticed the rattle at around 20 MPH, its just super low. I also noticed it only happened when I had my AC on. When i turn it off the rattle SEEMS to go away. Wondering if that has anything to do with it or if its purely coincidental

Sure will. Lots of people with this issue. I’m replacing the belt tensioner this weekend in hopes that that is the issue. I’m skeptical. I have an appointment to ride with a regional tech from Nissan. But, not until September 10. I’m going to be pissed if the tech says this a normal cvt noise, which it might be. We’ll see. Having a noisy car is like having a pair of sneakers that creek as you walk. Lol.

Hey everyone. Replaced the tensioner today and it did not help the low rpm rattle. I hope someone else has more luck than me.

Thank's for the report back. Sorry it did not fix the noise. I too have heard the noise on my former 2016 when the car is @ 35 to 40 mph and at iits lowest rpms. Kind of a light tingle clink noise that always went away at other speeds.

Thanks to Natro30 for your feedback. Anyone else had success (or failure) with fixing the noise by replacing the belt tensioner?

Hello

Hello everybody I registered in this website specifically to reply to this thread and share my experience.

my experience with the same issue u all facing. I own maxima 16 S since 2017 as new car I faced this issue since almost one year and half.

I took it to the Nissan dealer and first time they changed the AC compressor and still not fixed.
Then they changed the tensioner but it didn't fixed it yet.

Still have the same problem till now.

One thing good to mention I read someone claimed that this sound goes away after changing engine belt. After 100 thousand km.

Interesting thread as I too had the same noise (2019 Platinum) so at 5000 mile service for oil-filter-tire rotation, they did a thorough engine/underside inspection while the front access panels were down. Also road tested the car with a tech and you guessed it, not a single tin car rattle type noise to be found! So it has to be something in the lower engine area that creates a rattle. I'll keep you all posted on this

We appreciate your good news and the follow up to share this with our group. When you say "engine belt" you are refering to the serpentine belt ?

Same rattle, belt tensioner didn’t fix.

Hey everyone. I have the exact same rattle at 30mph around 1k rpm and sometimes at 40mph and it’s driving me nuts. First I thought It was the heat shield then I saw the belt tensioner suggestion. I had the belt and tensioner replaced with no success. Does anyone have a resolution to this?? I’m thinking it has to be a heat shield rattle.
