Power steering issues?

Hello everyone,

I am hearing a whining noise when I start my car and creaking noises when I turn the steering wheel left or right at low speeds. I took it to the Nissan dealership and they said that the electronic power steering pump is going bad (possible fluid contamination from failure of power steering rack) and that I will also need to replace the steering rack and pinion. All of this will cost $4400 for a 2017 Maxima SL with only 105,000 miles on it. I don’t drive my car hard…it’s just a daily driver to/from work and putzing around town. Is this a common thing to happen for a car at this age and milage? Should I get a second opinion?

Thanks in advance!

I have an '18 with 72000 miles and have had the whining and creaking when turning at super slow speeds for about a year now. Doesn't seem to be getting any worse.....yet.

I would be very leery of your dealer's quote. You can look up the part (EPS) Electronic Power Steering Module & even with labor it shouldn't
be any near your quote. Try another dealer.

I replaced both my front lower control arms because the bushings were torn. I also flushed and refilled the power steering fluid. However, the noise persists. I haven’t had the opportunity to take it to another shop for a second opinion.
