I have three sets of 16 inch rims:
stock 5 spoke
300zx NA
RX7

I am running some Brembo rotors, SS lines, and hawk HPS pads.

Are there any ROTOR or CALIPER options I can use and still keep my rims?

I prefer to not use longer studs or spacers as a 'fix'.

I'd go with J30/Q45 calipers and rotors. You will have to get the rotors milled down a few mm to fit. But you can use your maxima's brake pads (cause you have hawks--don't change). You can also keep your rims. However, they are really heavy iron calipers. Go to www.rockauto.com if you want to skip the junk yards.

You can't really do a rotor upgrade due to your 16" rim limitations. You would need at least 17"s to clear a 12.6 or 13" rotor upgrade.

Why don't you get the 300ZX TT f/r calipers? front is 4POT and rear is 2POT, not sure what rotors you would be able to fit on those, but the calipers are 30mm and are made out of aluminum, so they are pretty light as well

 

IMO your best bet would be to try Z32 front brakes. You'll still have to mill the front rotors a few mm in order to fit, but they should probably clear the Z32 wheels.

Someone at some point was looking into a caliper reloacation kit to fit some 12" TL calipers, but they never got around to it.

 

Your best bet is J30/Q45 NOT 300zx. 300zx will clear 300zx 16" wheels and that is about it. They won't clear your SE wheels and I highly doubt they will clear the Mazda wheels. I would go J30/Q with Hawk Pads and RTP 3mm milled rotors.

 

Ah true, I missed the part about keeping all sets of wheels. My bad.

 

Go with the J30 calipers. you need to mill the diameter at least 3mm. You need the J30 torque member and pads as well. You will also need to mill down or grind the control arm next to the ball joint to prevent scoring of the inner rotor. Stopping power is great and the rotors can handle the abuse since there thicker. I believe 25mm.

If I were to put my 97s SE wheels on my 95, and take the 17" Altima wheels off it for my 97, would that help anything?

I will search for some good write-ups on the j30/q45 installs. I do not know if I am comfitable with "milling" though :>

 

Well have a qualified machine shop do it. I know 98blackmaxse had his rotors milled for $40 for the pair. As for a write up you probally will not find one since there is nothing difficult to this upgrade. Once you have the milled rotors just install those as you work any rotors and the Q45 caliper will bolt to the hub/spindle in the stock location and it will use the stock brake lines. I did quite a bit of research on this upgrade but never followed up because I purchased a new car. From what I have read this upgrade is very favorable since it will not throw off you brake bias too much.

P.s: if you interested i am selling a pair of Q45 front calipers .

 

If anyone is trying to do this project...you should invest in a die-grinder with a burr bit to remove metal.

No the write up you provided will work. I just wanted to clarify that they are no the same calipers.

 

They are very close, but not the same, not sure what the exact differences are though. As for installing them, it should be close enough.

 

Looks different, functions the same, Ithink they use the same pads as well.

FYI, I believe they require a small spacer, but 3rd gen RX7 rims WILL work with the Z32 calipers. SX7R used to run them.

I need recommendation,

We got accepted in the 24 hours of Lemons race. We gave a 1997 Maxima. The seller of the car put on 17" wheels. The rules allow for "open" brakes. I was wondering what "cheap" (front) brake upgrade can we do with 17" wheels? should we just upgrade the pads? is the there another nissan rotor/caliper package that would fit that we can pick-up used?

 

For LeMons, the stock brakes will be up to the task assuming you put some good pads on it. Porterfield R4 or Hawk HT-10 or maybe even some Hawk HP+ would do the job.

Which track are you planning to race at? The Texas event runs on a pretty small/tight track where you don't ever build up a lot of speed, so you don't need much brake.

 

A spacer will pretty much be required to fit Z32s behind FD3S wheels. There was a small decrease in distance from the spoke to the outside of the caliper when I ran mine.

 

A part of the difference in that picture of the 45s is the bracket for the electronic wear sensor that is only on one (driver's side) caliper.

 

How about Z33 TT calipers and A34 rotors?

guys, im looking to geting the q45 brake upgrade, but im not clear what is needed is this pretty much correct??
The year is 90 - 96 q45 calipers and rotors . Are these 12 inch rotors? I can use my own lines, removed or cut the dust shield and they will bolt right up? or do i need to mill the rotor? By milling the rotors is it making the diameter smaller or what exactly are you milling?

What is the Biggest brake upgrade that you can fit under a stock 97 SE rim? The J30 i know will fit (the rotor diameter is the same, you just have to play around with clearancing the torque member).

What about a 5.0 or 5.5? I have read that they will fit on a 16" rim....but not specifically the 97-99 SE 16" rim.

Im not talking about increasing the size of the rotor (at least not so much that I have to get aftermarket rims) but getting better calipers than stock (ie more surface area or 2 pot instead of one).
