Rear BBK thoughts
Rear BBK thoughts
Well just a quick question/thought.
For those of you who have seen the Ford GT with the performance package, it has brembo brakes. Well i noticed obviously the beautiful gloss black calipers, and on the rears i noticed there were 2 calipers. I figure the smaller one is for the e-brake while the 4 piston brembo one was the actual brake.
Well what im wondering is, if we could use a larger rotor, or whatever the rotor is not the issue, if we use the Z32 rear caliper, and some how fabbed up a relocation bracket to move the stock caliper farther down the rotor or whatever so we can still retain the stock ebrake?
Would this work? I havent even looked to see if the Z32 caliper will bolt onto the stock torque arm, and i imagine making a relocation bracket to move the caliper vertically downwards would be difficult at best, but its an idea eh lol. Seeing as the only real rear bbk for the 4th gen is Matt's Z32 internal drum, insanely designed kit, i wish i had the skills to design and fab up something like that, but as most people will agree its a lot to spend on the rear bbk.
Just wondering what your guys thoughts are on this?

Personally I like the rear drum idea for one reason: being the crazy, suspension-oriented, handling-minded fellow that I am, I'd rather put on an internal drum with aluminum calipers than have two sets of calipers, simply because it's less weight AND the increased drum weight is further inside the suspension (actually, at the very center) versus outbound.
Other than that, it all depends on what you can do (if you can find a machine shop to machine a bracket for you) and if you're willing to do it. Z32 calipers aren't expensive, and you have your OEM ones, why not? Besides, it'd be really easy to 180 with TWO rear calipers locking the rear wheels. Tons of fun.

yeah thats what i was thinking. I have access to what i think is a pretty capable machine shop, i have some frehsly rebuilt Z32 calipers, along with rears too, so i think i might just play with it and see how it goes.
Ideally id perfer to go with the full Z32 rear bbk and use the internal drum, i think its a much better design, but it just seems like too much work for me to even try myself. Personally im not a full out crazy suspension buy, im more oreintated on doing every aspect of the car, suspension/braking/engine mostly, exterior im not too concerned about tho.

it's a popular setup for rear drum conversions on classic cars...
most people use wilwood rear 2 or 4-piston calipers and wilwood also sells a cable-controlled ebrake secondary caliper that attaches seperately..

Nice thats what im looking for. The one i saw on the GT was very similar. But i believe a lot of those more high end cars use that setup too. Perhaps tomorrow if i have time i will pull off my rear wheels and see if there is enogh room to do a setup like that.
line locks will work fine, but legally they won't pass inspection. the parking/emergency brake must be completely isolated from the main hydraulic system so that you can stop the car in the event of a hydraulic failure.
so if you blow a brake line, your line locks won't work. mechanical brake still will.

Yeah. Thats what my freind with his 88 toyota truck did. He had upgraded the front and rear brakes but during the process something happened, cant remember once but he ended up just using a mechanical line lock for the ebrake. Said it worked awesome, much better then his originial e-brake did, but he did say it was illegal.
I guess in the case of an accident, they found that you didnt have a seperate e-brake you'd be kinda screwed.

haha epileptic engrish? Didnt even notice till you pointed it out. Yeah no inspections here, unless i get pulled over and the po-po and he sees something he doesnt like. I already have tinted windows and HID's, im curious if the inspection facility would even notice it though.

not that I would suggest such a thing. :wink wink nudge nudge:
