altima/maxima 2002+ transmissions

I know they use a 6-speed manual in 2002+ Maximas, and that they also use a 5-speed manual on 2002+ Altimas and a 4-speed automatic on both 2002-2003 Altimas and Maximas.

Are the 4-speed automatics and 5-speed manuals the same we have on our 1995-1999 4th gens? Does anyone have the specific name of those transmissions?

Yes, same model number. They are stronger than the 4th gen ones.

So they must be externally identical to a 95 5-speed?

Where did you get the model number, btw? I can't find them on the org or yahoo.

'95 - '01 5 speed is the RS5F50A

'02+ 6 speed is either the RS6F51A or the RS6F51H (Helical Limited slip differential.)

'02+ 5 speed Altima uses the RS5F51A

'05 6 speed Altima SE-R uses the RS6F51H

'02+ Sentra and SE-R 5 speed uses the RS5F51A

'02+ Sentra SE-R SpecV 6 speed uses the RS6F51H

'91-'94 Sentra SE-R Uses the RS5F32V (Viscous Coupling Limited slip differential)

Other 5 speed Sentra SE-Rs and some Infiniti G20s use the RS5F70V

Found this:

http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...ons.htm#Altima

Says all 1997-2005 Altimas use same 4-speed automatic, and that all 1997-2004 Maximas use the same 4-speed auto too.

Although nothing specifies the difference between the RS5F50A (1995-2001) and the RS5F51A (2002-2004). Codes are identical except that it's "51" instead of "50".

Also, is there a difference since my tranny is the canadian version (LSD)? My guess is that mine may be "RS5F50V" instead of "RS5F50A"...

EDIT: Also found this:

http://www.drivetrain.com/nissanRS5F50Afwd5sp.html

Maxima RS5F50A 1985-96
Maxima with LSD 1992-96 (Doesn't have the code, dammit!)

92 to 94 se vlsd is RS5F50V

i assume the internalls are the same but the VE/VG has a different bellhousing bolt patern than the VQ

non lsd is as stated above but the 2nd gen uses a taller final drive i beleve 3.42 instead of the 3rd gen 3.90

im going to try to use the 2nd gen final drive in my vlsd tranny to get longer gears and i think it will work

So the altima 2002+ tranny has the same bellhousing as the 95-01 VQ tranny.

All VQ bellhousings will bolt upto all VQ engines. But the flywheel/clutch/crank tigger combos vary quite a bit bewteen vehicles.

And there's no way to confirm it will fit by looking at what the numbers/letters mean on the transmission names? Even 5-speed for 5-speed?

Confirm what? I said ALL VQ bellhousings will fit on ALL VQ engines. But a 50A bellhousing for a KA, etc. IS different than one for a VQ.

I'm not talking about bellhousing, I meant flywheel clutch and crank trigger. Tilley supposedly did it, but he did not really tell us how much work he had to do to make it fit. I guess there's no real way of knowing until I drop the engine in and see for myself...

The '95-'01 crank triggers, flywheels, clutches can be shared. The '02+ FWD crank trigger, flywheel, clutches are different. The '03+ RWD setup is slightly different still.

Then how did he mate a 3.5 block with his 5-speed tranny without modifying crank/flywheel and clutch trigger?

He still used the cars existing ECU. Therefore he didn't and didn't need to.

Old thread revival...

I researching LSD Automatics, I found one entry (somewhere) that said 2002 Altima 3.5 Automatics were stronger than our 4th Gen Autos and included LSD's.

Can anyone confirm this?
