What do you mean by 3.5L Cams vs JWT Cams? 3.5L is an engine and JWT is a company. Tomei, JWT, and nismo all make cames for the 3.5L. I believe they are all about the same minus the different grinds. Somebody else can step in and explain the grind because that is a grey area for me.

So you mean JWT 3.0L cams, or stock 3.5L cams, right?

I must have missed the thread where this was talked about, but do the 3.5 cams retrofit to the 3.0 heads?

SR20DEN will probably chime in and elaborate/clarify, but I believe they will work if you use the dowels(?) from the 3.0 cams.

Per krismax and japmax's website the VQ35 cams won't fit in the VQ30 heads although SR20DEN said otherwise previously. Jury is still out?

Anyways, one thing that might be "helpful" is that JWT makes some kind of "sprocket adapter" for the Pathfinder/QX4(assuming 2000-2001) to use the later VQ35 cams.

Maybe this would help japmax's problem?

Also, would VQ35 cams even benefit VQ30s? Yes, the lift is greater and probably the duration, however is lobe profile/timing optimized for the VQ35s CCVTC, which we don't have?

Cams are a science I don't understand much about, but the jist of what I've read is that it's pretty complex to optimize a set for a particular engine setup. So, even though you may be able to stuff a pair of VQ35 stock cams in a VQ30, that doesn't mean it will work or produce good results.

Hopefully it's possible and someone tries, so we can see some dyno plots to analyze.

Ok I was confident at first after changing the dowel pins but as I started to gather the rest of the parts for the install I came to numerous problems. First off the 3.5 cams when fitted with 3.0 sprockets they will sit to close to the head resulting in the cam chain smacking the side off the head. The bolt that holds the exhaust sprocket to the cam won’t go any further holding the sprocket in place. To solve that problem I will use shims to correct the spacing, that’s what you see at my car domain page. The 3.5 cams have the same lobe position as the 3.0 but in conjunction with the dowel slots it's the exact opposite of the 3.0 cams. Thus resulting in timing issues and as of right now I'm working on the new timing marks that need to be made so far so good.

VQ30DE Cams: Pending

VQ30DE-K Cams:
Int: 8.55mm lift (gross)
Ex: 9.0mm lift (gross)

VQ35DE Cams:
Int: 9.5mm lift (gross)
Ex: 9.5mm lift (gross)

JWT 3.0 cams:
256 duration
10.5mm lift (gross)

JWT 3.5 cams
260 duration
10.9mm lift (gross)

Any idea what the JWTs "sprocket adapters" for the QX4/Pathfinders to run JWTs VQ35 cams is all about?

F^ck JWT.

They won't help you anyway. I don't know when I will actually have time to finish proving that this swap will work and how. Japmax, you're very close already, just do what we talked about.

Ok I just spoke with JWT according to what they say the 3.5 cams are 3-5 degrees more on the Lobe center shift. than the 3.0. The buckets are larger on the 3.5 so the 3.5cam design is met for 3.5heads. I will need to mark the bucket face with some sort of dye or something then turn the cam and see if it wipes all of it off or not. If the cam lobe swipes all of it off it will not work. JWT actually never tested this out, unfortunately I don't have any capabilities of doing this. So I'll leave this up to whoever can or until I find a way tomorrow and find out if it's possible for me to do this.

Sr2o what do you think about this will it work or is this test necessary.

At this point id have to say SR20den was wrong I have a 3.5 sittin here and there is no way they will line up write without all you markings being off. But once i hear word back from the j-yard i may have a resolution (got a VQ35de today for a customer and I think its hydro locked grrrr) As soon as thats taken care of i have one more possible idea that may work.

The VQ35 buckets are smaller not larger.

And just because you can't figure it out doesn't mean that I am wrong. I never said it was a direct bolt in. It will work and I will prove it.

I have known and said they will work the whole time.

I have posted in other threads about test fitting VQ30 cams on a VQ35 head but conveniently no one seems to remember. I wouldn't be saying it if I hadn't already studied it for myself.

I only got a 3.5 motor this morning. So far i now have a 2k2 TB that is cable controlled. Cams should be no problem. I just havent ripped it down that far yet cause it is seized and motor wont spin.....

The truth is Ice that he and I shouldn't be arguing this at all. He basically called me out by publicly saying that I was wrong when I know how to make this work.

The only thing I have been proven wrong on thus far is the difficulty of making it work.

SO PROVE YOUR RIGHT. Im sure there is a way to make it work BUT you seem to have this idea in your head that swapping to the other guide pin hole will work and it doesnt. Also if you know why did you ignore japmax when he was tryin to figure it out, and why when krismax was gonna order 3.5 cams you told him to wait? are you unsure? Im sure there is a way.

That has already been proven to work and I have explained the final timing step to Japmax to finish the job. He apparently doesn't feel comfortable with it and he has given up.

Also if you know why did you ignore japmax when he was tryin to figure it out,
I got back to him when I had time. I can't hold a conversation on AIM during the day when I am supposed to be working. Most everyone should know that by now. After work the paying jobs come before Maxima.org and for a few week span I had almost more than I could handle.

and why when krismax was gonna order 3.5 cams you told him to wait?
I told him to wait on ordering everything untill he had other certain parts delivered to me.

are you unsure?
Of this? Nope.

Im sure there is a way.
Oh, but you just felt like trying to dispute me in public.

Everyone here has been wrong(especially myself *cough*VIAS rod*cough*) or correct at one time or another. It's nothing to get bent out of shape about.

We(read you) guys need to concentrate on putting your two/three/dozen or so members knowledge, ability, "bravado", etc. towards a common goal, ie making ALL of us faster.

Yes, everyone wants to be "the first", or "the greatest pioneer", or "always right" or whatever, however when it starts making enemies and secrecy to protect progress from the general public, I get disturbed and will b!tch/cry/moan LIKE USUAL.

It's hard to tell by our text here/gay smilies what peoples irony/sarcasm/humor was intended, so sometimes things get misinterpreted. I don't think japmaxSE or Tilley in his FIRST post was intending to *CRUCIFY* you as being fatally wrong...more of a something was overlooked or unknown at that point in time...kind of comment.

Just my .02..to drop who's right or wrong...this or that and work on figuring out HOW this can be done or brainstorm another possible solution.

Basically a few weeks ago he told me it was as simple as swapping guide pins, which is not the case, its more involved than that.

Don't remember what else we discussed about it? And I have already admitted that I was wrong about it being that simple. I also explained to Japmax about how to setup the timing. And he knows how to make it work.

If he knows why is he sending me the cams and telling me it wont work.

Are you sure Sr20 the buckets are smaller JWT says otherwise.
I was actually on the phone with them for at least 1/2hr and we went through it step by step and he looked at some specs and told me the 3.5 buckets are bigger. SR20 you did not answer my? about the GRIND. I really don't have the capabilities of trying this test out. I need to get my car running. I tried my best and it's allot more complicated then switching dowel pins that’s for sure.

3.5 Cam Swap
Step 1: Find out the Grind will the 3.5 cams work ?
Step 2: Relocate dowel pins*
Step 3: Insert Spacers: JWT $8 each*
Step 4: New Timing marks*

This is it I will wait until this FRI or SAT I'll try my best to see what I can Do I'm 90% sure that it will work but there are some things that need to be solved. Come on guys I'm almost there just me out here. I don't have much time left.

Tilley don't forget about the DE-K's let me know if you got them. This isn't looking good.
