I'm wanting to do an NA build-up on my '95 Maxima. From what I've gathered, it has the VQ30DE motor. Are the internals in this motor interchangable with the internals of the VG30DE (300zx motor)?

I have a friend with a used, still strong running 300zx motor he's willing to part with for cheap and I'd like to basically slap the top end of it onto a re-built bottom end of my motor. Will this work?

More specifically, is the block the same (ie. heads and pistons/rods etc a direct swap?)

Asking questions like this will get you flamed. But since you didn't know, the VG and VQ share nothing but the Nissan badge.

 

My brother is a student at UTI, and one of the instructors there is a huge NIssan guy and wealth of knowledge. He told my brother that the VQ is actually a stronger motor. The VG has the iron block, but the crank is actually stronger on the VQ. He also said that although both engines are 3.0L, they are completely different. The VQ is a superior engine in his view...although the car he says he wants is a 300ZX NA that he can turbo up.

 

VQ is better. The VG has no mechanical parts that you can swap.

If you can get the TT block and pistons, it'll be even faster NA
