Summit RPM switch

I finally tried hooking up my summit rpm switch to the vias. The red light come on indicating power but when I try and rev the engine to and pass the desired RPM it does nothing. The vias does not move and the geen light does not come on. I have the white wire hooked up to the (White-green striped) tacho wire going into the gauge cluster and tried the TAM screw, hooked black to ground, red to power supply, gray to the vias. What am i doin wrong? I don't know which wire to plug in from the coil packs so need help.

The white/green tach RPM wire should supply adequate signal to activate the Summit RPM switch. I have used a summit switch to operate a VI..

The wiring hook up should be

red - 12V
black - gnd
white - tach sig
yellow - to the VI, green/yellow wire on VI harness

Also make sure the VI has a fused source of +12V also. Keep in mind the Summit was made for V8s so you have to mess with the RPM settings a bit. Set the summit switch to activate at 3000 rpm, that equates to about 5500 rpm on our cars IIRC... And finally I can't stress this enough but make sure to solder and heat shrink all the wiring, dont just wrap them together.

It’s an RPM switch that you can use to activate the butterflies on the VI or MEVI. It’s a bit more primitive to the Harlen RPM switch but it’s more rugged and easier to use. The only downside is that you have to mess with the Summit switch's RPM settings to get it to work on our cars. Like I posted earlier a Summit switch setting of 3000 rpm equates to about 5500 rpm on our cars.

You don't run the summit off the coil pack you run it off the TAM screw or the tach signal wire on the ECU harness.

Thats what i figured but it was not working at first, so I went to the DIY forums on vqpower.com and it said the you can use the TAM screw, tach signal or coil packs. Thats why I asked.

Having just done this for somebody, I can say with high confidence that you can't use a coil pack to drive the Summit rpm switch.

I can also say in high confidence you can't do it. I've tried it and it doesn't work.

Same here, TAM screw was the easiest RPM source for me.

If the TAM is wacky (i.e needs adjusting) then it will only work when not under load, i.e fake you out when revving at idle.

But as far as using the coil for signal, it's not meant for it, only the tach signal off the ECU.
