So, what is the final answer on 4th gen timing?
So, what is the final answer on 4th gen timing?
I have been searching and reading but I am getting conflicting reports on whether or not you can adjust 4th gen timing without upgrading the ECU or running a piggyback. One report I got said you could do it with a consult 2 as long as your car was OBDII, and the other report said you could, but it would revert back to stock when you shut the car off. Which is the truth? I would like to get about 3 degrees adv. to run with racing fuel.
IIRC, 4th gen ECUs are ROM (read-only Memory), so you could advance the timing with a consult2, but like THT said, the ECU would go back to stock timing the moment its turned off. You can advance the timing on the 5th gen ECU and it would maintain that timing because that ECU is flashable.
Hope that helps

^^^ That is all correct. You can't advance timing on a 4th gen permanently without going piggyback or aftermarket ECU. I have personally confirmed this on my car using the Consult. It will only let you adjust timing for diagnostic purposes. Once the car is turned off, the changes are gone.
