This is on the 4th generation forum, at the top in a sticky. The problem is present in our year Maximas and I have heard one story of the problem here in my area. This guy found the problem by shaking/twisting the harness and the problem went away. He replaced the whole harness.
Hope this helps.

Yesterday I took the car to the dealer... after 2 hours of testing, they didn't find the problem. They will continue testing today. I'll keep posted.

Wow, Thats not a good thing. I hope they are able to help you, and that they don't put you into bankruptcy in the process.
I'm going out to try a few more things this morning. I'll keep you posted.

That points to either a CPS (POS) or cam position sensor issue. I can vouch for the CEL not coming on for these while cranking if they're bad.

I checked both crank sensors pos and ref. The pos tested normal 12v on red 5 on white like the chiltons said, and the ref tested within specs.

Maybe I missed something Wunfstmax, have you taken the codes off the ecu? These guys are good, and there is a lot of information you can get from the stickies and the various links but the best starting point seems to be pulling the trouble codes out of the ecu.
You can download the EC section of the factory manual and that has a good schematic of the coil packs. You can test for voltage and ground at each coil pack. The signal to fire comes out of the ecu, its all shown on the schematic.
Hope this helps.

I got 0407 crankshaft ref. The biggest difference i guess would be that my car is turbocharged. I tested the front 3 coils, since i dont know if they are supposed to be getting 12v on the red wire( the chiltons says that there is supposed to be voltage present, not how much voltage though). I got 9v on red and no voltage on the rest. I didnt do a continuity check on them.

Well, I went down to the local parts store and we had a discussion about my new rebuilt starter (actually over a month old)and I told them the saga and they all looked at me like I had three heads but they were fair. He found me another rebuild from another rebuilder who knew about the different ones available. This one had 10 teeth on the pinion. I took a chance since they were not about to give me my money back.
No luck. It starts but not easily and not good enuf to use. So I'm off tomorrow morning to the boneyard where I bought the engine to see if I can find the right starter in a wreck. If all else fails I'll go to the dealer.
I'll keep you posted.......

Last weekend we installed a new/used starter, the 11 tooth OEM unit and the car now starts. It ain't perfect but all today it actually started real good. We now have about 200 miles on the new engine and everything seems to be ok, you never know with a engine fromn the junkyard. I did have low compression initially in #3 cylinder but a retest after we ran it for a while showed 181 psi., right with the other 5. Maybe a valve had something fouling it and holding it open, who knows.
All told this cost me about $1200.00 (including $360.00 towing) and more hours than I even want to think about but I sure learned a lot......
The only starter to use in Gen 4 is the 11 tooth unit, made by Hitachi, 23300-2Y900.
Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Jon
