yeah, pretty much. I might do a turbo later just cause I can- mainly to get the piping done and working so that I can develop a kit... but it'll be built for n/a performance.

You mean the rust pile?
I have a new set of rotors I'll get put on there when I get it running.

you don't want them... they're cracked.. I was going to order new ones as soon as the track event was over.... then I blew the engine.

Holy bore spacing Battman! So what did you have it punched to? And how thick are those cyl. walls?

just went to 87.5mm on them (stock is 87). it was either that or go with custom pistons at $1450 a set. I stuck with off-the-shelf JEs for a Z32 NA.. $700w/ rings instead.

What was the feasibility of using KA, QR or NAPS-Z, 89mm pistons?

These are NA Z pistons. 87.5mm
going any bigger is custom.. the other block I took them was going to require boring to 89mm and the numbers above were my quote for the pistons from JE.

As for using anything else, I was concerned with deck height and wrist pin spacing and etc. I knew these pistons would drop in without problems so I went with them. quick and easy way to safely up the compression.

Sounds like you're doing everything top-notch, very nice.

Why not SwainTech coat to help run the high compression?

Also, any pics of the block surface without the gasket on?

basically, it's more time and money that I don't have. I could have gotten these coated from Polydyn since they're right up the street, but more money and more downtime than I felt like messing with. Plus with the forged pistons compared to the stock cast POS, I don't see it being a huge issue.

This is very exciting Matt. Can't wait to know how she runs and what the dyno will reveal.

go to lightspeed and get it dynoed, not SGP racing.

Nice work Matt, I wonder what the dyno #s are gonna be.

It also looks like were both cutting it close for Maxus. I finally got the DEK fired up tonight, still got alot of other stuff to do but it should be on the road this week.

finally gave up at 11pm.. 15 hours in the sun was enough for me... All I've got left is to get the axles, starter, battery, fluids, and a couple random gadgets installed and it'll be up and running. can easily tackle all that tomorrow after work..

I was hoping to have it running, but I spent 3 hours wandering around looking for the plates that go between the tranny and engine.. I never did find the very bottom one and just stuck a washer in there for spacing to keep everything in line. as long as I don't drive through any water until a new one gets here, I'll be fine.

I got it started last night, but it just sputters and dies. The engine itself runs smooth when it gets a good squirt of gas, but it won't idle worth ****. I'm assuming (HOPING!!!!) it's just bad gas in the tank. it's been sitting for almost a year now.

What sucks is that **** is FULL... I gotta find a way to dump 17 gallons of bad gas.

I don't know much about it, but isn't there some kind of gas restorer? Something you can poor in that will allow you to use gas that has been sitting for months at a time. I have no idea if it works or not.

When my max was totalled, it had JUST put 15 gal of super in. I just removed the seat, took out the fuel pump and used a hand pump to get it into 3 5 gal cans. Dad used it in his lawnmower!

yup.. that's the plan is to just pump it out.

Aaron, there's products out there that will stabilize gas for storage and will supposedly 'restore' stale gas, but after I just dumped nearly $4000 in this engine, I'm not going to take a chance at damaging it to save $50 on a fresh tank!

Good point! I hope everything works out for ya. I'd love to hear your reviews after you get it running perfectly.

AAAAAARRRRRGH!!

Fawking rear head gasket it leaking coolant everywhere!!

well you guys won't be seeing my Maxima at Maxus this year. too much work, not enough time to put it together.

Edit... worse than I thought...
1: 205psi
2: 202psi
3: 0psi
4: 177psi
5: 0psi
6. 197psi

Needless to say, the machine shop will be getting a few words from me if I tear this down and find out it's in the heads.....

Could this be the reason why it was sputtering? What's the likely hood of it having bad gas? Weren't you at the track the last time the car was running and wasn't that less than a year ago? I'm no chemical engineer but can't gasoline sit longer than a year for the most part without any problems.

I would have suggested to check your base time, but with the heads leaking water you have no choice but to re-check the base timing once you have replace your head gasket.

As I'm reading this post I see folks saying they can't wait to see dyno numbers, what are your expectations from this engine? Besides the port and polish heads and Z32 pistons what other mods have you installed? Larger valves, lighter retainers/keepers, change valve spring rate, gapless rings, polished journals?

Mike, that's about all I did with it were the pistons and the head porting. There's almost zilch for room in the combustion chambers for larger valves, so I don't see it happening on this kind of budget. I'm investigating some springs and retainers, but was going to worry about that ex post facto on this engine... since it's all coming apart, I may take the time to do some more checking on it as well.
