Cam timing theory for 3.5 swaps w/out VTC
Reading the VTC vs. RPM thread here and cam timing theory in general i've come to realize that for good top-end power there needs to be as little intake cam timing advance as possible. The A33B ECU starts to retard cam at around 4000 RPM or so and retards it to nearly zero advance at redline. To my knowledge the drillers of the intake cams are doing it such that they're drilling halfway between full advance and full retard. Since the cam angle sweep is 30+ crank degrees, this would mean there is currently around 8* of cam advance with these swaps. While this might be good for mid-range torque, is it possible that these swaps sans VTC can sqeeze out better top-end performance by retarding the intake cam a bit??
OK. Reading this thread, is it like this for VQ30's as well since we don't have VTC's??? When I do runs on this side block out by my sister's house I realized that once I go over 6500 RPM's with my JWT the power starts to drop off so I started to shift earlier in second gear for the most part. This kind of goes with what you are saying because the JWT has advanced timing period throughout the entire RPM band. I think that is what is going on.
Mr. mforrest100, he's asking about CAM TIMING.
What you're pondering about is IGNITION TIMING.
Easy to confuse, but not the same. But you should definatly keep an eye on this thread, its going to get interesting...
