No Restrictions. They fit right together. Just use some glue to limit the amount of voids where the two air ducts join.

Why? The valve cover itself is what takes the most work. Why spend the extra cash on the 3 rear coils when I can just hack mine incredibly easily?

now your most recent statement, it sounds like you're hacking the 4th gen one? so which one are you doing?

 

Umm, I'm buying the 5th gen rear cover and hacking the 4th gen coils. The difference in the 5th gen cover (besides the PCV placement) is the complete lack of a second set of coil pack bosses. Hack up the 4th gen coil packs and they'll basically be the same as the 5th gen rear coils without all the cost, end of story. Modifying the cover itself won't need done, though.

Really you don't even need to hack them much. Truly, with the coil packs, you don't even really need to bolt them down. I've talked to others who have left them completely unbolted and been fine. It's position doesn't matter, and the coil pack can't really go anywhere anyway, it has no room to move.

I wouldn't personally be willing to hack anything on the coils or leave them unbolted. Knowing my luck, something would go wrong at the worst possible time. With the availability of rear valve covers with PCV valves and coils on the salvage market, it's a pretty cheap investment to do the swap and still have some piece of mind. For comparison, I picked up a pair (2) rear coils with 23k miles on them for $20 each. I then called DaveB and purchased the third one brand new for $65. $105 for three coils and another $20 for the rear valve cover including the PCV valve, it's more than worth it to me. Just my opinion of course.
