At 80k it should not be bad. 4th gen ones usually start to fail above 120-150k+ And that was due to the bad tensioner used on 95-96 and early 97's. They improved the design later and I have yet to see a 98+ with a premature tensioner problem.

I bought a kit and replaced all chains and tensioners. It is not worth the risk when you are in there already.

But the tensioner can be replaced through the black plate on the timing cover so when or if it fails in 60k miles he can do it then. But that is me. It all depends if you can wait or not. If you can wait, sleeper is right, do it right the first time.

That's the tensioner itself. If it were to be replaced, it's best to replace the whole assembly-guides, tensioner, and spring.

I reused all my 98 timing equipment and I have 232k miles on the clock.

Everything was in good shape, otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

If I was in there, I would replace it with ALL NEW Nissan stuff. Its not worth re-using the old stuff. Even with 80k on it.
