Vehicle speed sensor question..

hey, i just got a 2k1 ae cluster for my 4th gen, and it's all ready to put in, i made the wiring diagram after looking at the 2 FSM's, but one this is bothering me: the vehicle speed sensor that leads into the speedometer. In the 5th gen cluster, the cluster itself sends a voltage signal to the VSS, and thats how it determines the speed, but on the 4th gen, it's the other way around (VSS sends voltage to the speedo). Also, i looked at the voltages, and the 2k1 VSS is about 2.5V, and the 4th gen one is 5.2V. I'm just afraid the speedo won't work properly. Do you have any solutions/thoughts on this?

I PM'ed eng92, as he did this with a 5.5 gen, but I think he had a whole different wiring harness.

Should I use a 2k1 speed sensor? Is that even possible with a 4th gen tranny?

Thanks, i appreciate any input.

i used the same VSS in both my 4th gen and 2k1 AE LSD transmission... there was no issue.

The 98 VSS will work fine with the 2K1 cluster.

Just connect pin 1 on the VSS to pin 15 in your 2k1 cluster. Connect pin 2 on the VSS to the ecu sensor ground (pin 43 on your ecu)

I found out a working combo earlier today.

I put pin 2 to the VSS, and 4 to a body ground, and the speedo works great. It's fully functional now. Thanks,.

That may be a little confusing for some because you are referring to terminal numbers, 2 and 4, from the 98 cluster which is no longer in the vehicle.

Just so it is clear for everyone who may try this.

Pin 2 on the 98 cluster corresponds to Pin 15 on the 2K1 cluster. The other end of the wire is connected to pin 1 on the VSS.

The wire comes off of pin 4 on the 98 cluster (which connects to the VSS terminal 2) and is grounded.

i have a writeup, pm me for it if anyone wants to find out how to retrofit a 2k1 cluster into their 4th gen.
