Also, The spark retard you are mentioning is done from the factory on LS1's to cut down on warranty claims. The ECU retards the WOT timing right before the shift to cut down on the shock to the tranny. I believe GM calls it "Torque Management". Some people have this feature deleted (via programming) to get better times. If I remember correctly this was also done on 5 speed 5.0 Mustangs late in their run (in the 1990's). Ford did this also for warranty reasons as the T-5 death rate is high. Some people swapped out ECU's to earlier models for gains. I don't know if this worked though.
This is a great thread!!!

I'm very consistent at the track, unless I hook up just right, then the car really moves! Learning how to make the controller cut spray at shift, as well as control the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, has worked very well for a junkyard engine and tranny with spray, on a car with full exhaust and no weight reduction - 3300 lbs at the line! I still need to dyno-tune and figure out more traction in the first 330'. Shifts are very quick and hard. I like it.
The only import I can't whip is one with a big snail and lots of boost - and I've carved up some of those on their bad days. These guys run 10s and 11s, mostly with carved-out Hondas, but they're not a full street car, either. Very few nissans ever show on the strip, and track Maximas are almost non-existent around here. It's been fun spraying the 3.0 and automatic.....
