strange timing position of 3.5 cams

I know how to set timing as I have read the FSM and the many posts here about timing issues with the 3.0 equipment on the 3.5, but this one has me a bit baffled. I set the crank to tdc before removing the chains and gears. The exhaust cam gears were pretty tough to break loose, and in the process, the cams turned a partial rotation. I turned them back and now they are sitting a little off from where they were before. Before the rotation, the cam lobes on #1 were sitting turned in toward each other as they are supposed to, but now they sit pointing straight up. No matter how you rotate the cams, they still do not fall into place as before. Following are some pictures I took so you can see the dowel pin locations, the cam lobes at #1 and #4 respectively. Looking at the FSM, they recommend rotating the cams where the dowel pins on the exhaust and the smaller diameter hole on the intake cams are perpendicular to the head surface. It looks like the right side it good there, but the left is off. I have read that #1 and #4 cam lobes should be pointed toward each other if they are indexed correctly at tdc. Someone reasure me that I'm not going to screw up the timing when I start to put the gears and chains in.

You mean that they won't stay put? I believe that happened to me too.

Just line up the rear pins just like you have the front bank lined up, and have someone hold the camshafts steady while you install the sprockets and chain.

mine did the same ****...my right side was/is mint...the left side was just like yours...they (both left side cams) popped to the left a 1/4 of the way....looks like the pic you showed...from what i have READ...you point all the dowels pins up BEFORE you put on the spacers...and thats the way.

from Tarvish's write up and the FSM, the dowell pins in each banks is suppose to be @ 10 and 2 respectively. The #1 lobe should face each other and #4 faces towards each other downwards. I had trouble at first cranking the right bank intake cam but I realize since our motor is an interference motor, the valve were preventing the full 360degree rotation...
from the looks of your pic you pins are off by comparison to mine and others that I have seen. What I recommend is just bolt the sprocket in, then line up the secondary and main chain with the respective marks and you should be go to go. Right now just eyeing the lobes and pins isn't gonna get you anywhere.

heres the pic:

Is the 10:00 and 2:00 relationship true of the right side as well? The FSM shows both dowel pins on the exhaust and small diameter holes on the intake to be straight up. I can't imagine that to be right based on what limited knowledge I have.

Two things here.

#1, if you toss the sprockets on, you will see that the arrows should point towards two little 'nubs' on the bottom/inside of the top part of the inner cover (how confusing), there is one 'nub' on each side of the timing cover, you have to tilt your head down really low to see them, but that is only for the main chain anyways.

#2 the little nubs for 10/2 o-clock positions are irrelevent, it's all irrelevant, once you put the sprockets & chains on the links will line it up, don't worry to much about lining anything up yet, just get it close, then line it up with the sprockets/links/marks/arrows/dots.

That's what I'm figuring out at this point. I was worried for nothing. Thanks KRRZ.

No problem and good luck, I feel weird giving all these people timing advice since mine jumped a tooth upon starting twice in a row, make sure you have a new tensioner filled with oil as much as possible, and all the slack on the waterpump side.
