My 00VI Thread w/pics and vids

OK I'll start with my problem. I got it to the point where it will crank but i'll hear a few popping noises and then it goes off. I' have vids of the sounds and pics of the whole setup. The popping sounds like its coming from the rear of the manifold. Heres one of the vids and the photos are uploading now.

Hmmm. Does that vid accurately portray what you hear? If so, I think I hear a vacuum leak, not positive. And Im not hearing any clicking in that clip. Since you said the rear part, Im leaning to EGR, maybe the IACV(well, not rear...).

Also, nice pics. I am posting a link to this in my 00vi thread.

Oh, and I think I hear a starting squeek, starter? If so, its worth the $ you save in regreasing it over buying a new one. Took me about an hour of work.

Well you really cant hear it too well in that vid. I might have to use my camcorder instead of my digital cam. I cut the top of the egr tube off and put a round piece of sheet metal on it with jb weld. its on there pretty tight. I'm uploading pics of that whole setup. Here is another startup vid. The starter was doing fine before I think that sqeal just started.

OK Apperently my egr block off plate sucked *** and air is seeping through it. My brother put his hand under it and held the plate up again the manifold and the popping noise went away. Were taking it apart to figure out how we can block it off better. Any siggestions will be very very helpful.

Sorry, no suggestions on an EGR block off plate.

The squeal doesn't mean its performing bad. Mine squealed after a bit of water got into it, and the lithium grease got old I just took it apart(its a 3/10 compared to 00vi) and re-greased it with some nice thick white lithium grease.

Oh Ok I think I have a lifetime warrenty on it when I bought it last year or so I'll have to check. Maybe they'll replace it for free.

We decided to try putting a few extra pieces of sheet metal in the middle where the hole is and tightening it down good. I only got one sucky pic of it before my battery died on my cam ftl.

Worst block off plate EVARRR:

How did you get the intake to sit properly like that? If I sit all my intake stuff at that angle, the midpipe (the box) is hitting off of equipment underneath it.

We just stuck it down there and it fit. I think its touching the stuff under it just a little. Pic:

Ok I got it to start a little bit better but still cutting off. When I start it it sounds kinda normal then it slowly cuts off and I hear a poof of air blowing out somewhere. Anybody experience that?

Hmm. I also had troubles with getting two accordion sections to stay together, how did you manage that?

I think I'm switching to 6" straight pipe off the throttlebody -> single accordion -> stock midpipe -> MAF -> filter. The short ram setup I've been stuck with for a while sucks in terms of routing hoses (especially for the IACV) and has no low end whatsoever. I need to get the stock midpipe back on somehow.

Here is multiple startups I just did. You can hear the popping noise and poof of air right before it cuts off.

Did you use the 4th or 5th? I read in this thread(Post #19) that you have to calibrate it.

Edit: That post is in regards to A33 TB and A32 TPS, so I am not sure.

Then I would say no. Not a definite but it would make sense to me that you would not have to.

Well I was sitting here thinking about how those accordians are together because last night i told my brother to pull it and check to see if they were tight and they came right off everytime. So I'm thinking that may be one problem. I may try removing one and finding the midpipe like you suggested.

Also I have alot more pics from the beginning of the swap to the end. I'll also be doing vids and pics of wiring my window switch. If anybody would like me to take pics of any specific hose or common vaccum leak locations I can when I get home.

Any of those pictures would help. Ill link them in my thread so we can get a compilation of info in it.

Just post them here, Ive already linked to this thread for your pics of the IACV adapter plate. Great help for anyone looking for a pic.

Also, I noticed that your engine was rockin back and forth(from about a second after startup until cutout). It seems more violently than should be...since you have pulled your injectors, etc, have you checked to make sure everything is ok there? Something about it makes me curious.

That was going to be my next question whether or not the injectors would cause this. I've been thinking that it may be them but just hoping in the back of my mind that its not. We'll most likely be taking everything apart again today so I'll pull them all and take pics off all of them since I have no idea what they are supposed to look like. The last video I posted is the most recent startup. I do know on the first startup it was shaking horribly but its not as bad now. While everything is apart I'll a few more pics of things I might have missed before.

Also I took alot of pics because I knew they would help others and possibly help in a future writeup.

Ok looking at this from ceasars thread the blue one should be capped if I'm not running my egr correct? I have all my egr equipment still connted I just cut the top of the tube off and and blocked it off and blocked off the hole on the manifold. Should I remove all the egr equipment? Also the yellow circled hose is still open will that cause it not to start?

Sounds like a couple cylinders aren't firing. It's not uncommon for junkyard injectors to be DOA. Well, not dead, just dirty/clogged.

Remove the plugs and see if any of 'em are spotless.

that hose inside of the yellow circle is for your VIAS, it's supposed to go to a fresh air source on your midpipe, but I have it open right now as well. That won't affect the starting of the car. on my first start, the engine was shaking like crazy and wouldn't stay on unless I kept the revs high. It sounded just like yours. It turned out that the 3 rear coils that I got with the VI were no good. I put in my 4th gen coils to confirm it and it ran much better but was still shutting off. To fix that, I had to raise the idle with the stop screw on the TB. Since I did that, it idles at 650 & has been good ever since. That egr guide tube is a ***** to get off, so if you have it properly blocked off and your IM is sitting properly with no vacuum leaks, then I think you may be able to get by with it on. Have you tried starting the car with the TPS disconnected?

before i installed my dek injectors, I was told to soak the ends of them in a little bit of chevron techron. No idea if it would have even done anything, but it seemed like good advice at the time I couldn't find anything to stand them in, so I used some plastic cups needless to say, when I went back to check on them, the cups had melted and there was techron all over the place. So if anyone decides to do this in the future, don't be like me!

Ok so coils and injectors. I'll check both when I get home. 2pb were your injectors clean after you did that? If so I'll try it.

On a side note out of all the days I waited to do this and all the days I've been riding around in my Z with no problems it decides not to start during lunch today. Now I'm carless and will be catching the bus to work. Aint this a *****!!

Dude. I envy you because you have a Z...haha. Just kidding.

Also, on the A32 mid pipe, there is a small nipple just left of the larger vacuum line. You could T that for your VIAS vacuum line(if you're not using is, then you're in luck!).

clean as a whistle man! just be sure to use metal containers, maybe a baking pan haha. after I took them out of the techron, I sprayed them with CRC electronic parts cleaner to eliminate any residue or impurities that may have been left over. By the time everything was done they looked brand new. sucks about the Z though! S*** always tends to happen that way!

OK cool I'll do that then.

I need to figure out whats going on with the Z so this is on hold until then. Heres the thread about my Z problem maybe one of you can diagnose it for me. Reply on my350Z or send me a pm with suggestions since I dont want this thread to go off topic.

That's not a suitable vacuum source. Vacuum = after the throttle plate.

Sorry Nismology, vacuum was the wrong term. 2pb said a fresh air source, so I mentioned that, just it shouldve not been vacuum. Anyhow, thanks for clearing that up. You're still good to use that mid pipe nipple though, ajcool2.

Oh, and nice pics! Definitely linked in my thread. Also, that is the A33 rear valve cover, right? And I couldn't tell, but did you go the A32 LIM route? If so, do you happen to have some pictures of it drilled for the UIM?

Thanks. I'm using the 5th gen UIM, LIM, and rear valve cover with the 4th gen TB.

hey man i would also check that egr blockoff plate again, if you're hearing the poof of air from that area. I kept the EGR guide tube, but I lost the gasket for it that sits between it and the upper IM. What I did was take some liquid gasket, make a nice ring of it around the hole and bolt the top part of the tube up to the UIM. It made a nice snug seal. If you didn't use any sealant when bolting on that blockoff plate, you may be leaking from there too.I hope this gets sorted out soon
