Keep popping coils, help

Ok, this is getting expensive now. First off, I'm running standalone, 1-4, 2-5, and 3-6 are in pairs and fire with a wasted spark on an AEM EMS. The problem is if one coil dies, it takes out its partner.

The engine was running just fine. All of a sudden I'm running on 4 cylinders. the 3-6 pair died on me in a pop and then burning electrical smell, the result is a bulge in the side of each coil:

I figured it was 1 bad apple and I replaced both in the pair, ran the car just fine, once, then they both went again.

I need to know. WHAT CAUSES A COIL TO BLOW LIKE THAT? is it a bad spark plug or is it one of the 3 wires (positive, signal, ground)? Could it be the EMS?

I don't want to keep trial and error, used ones cost me $20ea plus shipping and new ones are $65-95. Double that, considering 2 go at once.

Delete this thread, and just post the thread in the AM section, Jesus.

I've seen this in DSM's when we try and use a regular coil over plug module, in waste spark setups. They overheat, sometimes shorting and sometimes going open. In either case, it could potentially cause damage to it's paired coil.

They're overheating because they're exceeding their duty cycle and weren't intended to work as waste spark.

A friends coils did exactly that on a 3.5 swapped car. It ended up being a bad ground in the engine harness for the coils.

Thanks. I think I'm going to reground all 6 coils. And send a new signal to the 2 that are acting up. Also going to change 2 of the plugs just in case.

Alright, the 2 that were giving me problems:
2 new plugs, 2 new grounds, 2 new signal wires from the ECU.

So far, no problems but only time will tell, I've started it up, run it outside, high, medium and low throttle, idled it for about 5-10 minutes, shut it down. Let it cool a little, started it up, revved it a little, let it idle, etc.

^^^^^ That could very well be the case...

But something else to consider, are you certain your setup parameters are correct in the AEM? I'm not that familiar with AEM as I am with a couple others but for example I'm talking about things like current output selection, and especially dwell time.

Nea, the other coils have held just fine, it's just the coils on that 1 signal. Also, many are using this setup on the 350Z.

I'm thinking it was either a bad ground or something bad on the line, it's working so far., the other coils have been running for months now with no problems.
