UTEC - will it work with an A32 ECU ???

I want to be able to extend my RPM limit to 7000 or so, and also want absolute control of ignition advance. Nitrous, you know. I don't need any other UTEC features at the moment - just ignition control - well, maybe knock retard, too... I've read the UTEC install manual and the ORG threads about installing the UTEC in various cars, but I didn't find any confirmation that the UTEC will play nicely with the A32 ECU sensors.

It seems that the UTEC is designed to work with the engine sensors of the 350Z for ignition timing, and my A32/3.5 install uses the A32 timing sensors, as do most of these conversions. Reviewing the FSM for the 350Z and my '99, the crank/flywheel and cam sensors send very different signals - does this mean that the UTEC will never work in my car, or am I missing something?

I've been making 380 WHP at the strip with the stock ECU, and so far, so good, but the A32 ECU isn't very stable with ignition timing ( I've datalogged it), so before I raise the WHP some more, I feel the need to do something about it.

Any suggestions? Other piggybacks need not apply.....

So no one knows how the 350Z UTEC works ??

you need at least an a33b ecu, a34 if you want plug 'n play.

No, it won't work. I asked Jim about this.

And it was the 350Z sensors ??? the signals they send out to the ECU ??

I would imagine it's the VQ35 CPS waveform it's looking for since it can work with maximas w/ VQ35 ECU as well.

emanage my friend :-D Blue will retard timing. Ultimate will retard/ advance timing among other things on top of the blue (not to mention, extending revs ). All for alot less $ than the UTEC, even if the UTEC worked on the A32 ECU

I think he's aware of the EU already.

He wants a tuning solution that can take over ignition timing completely instead of just applying an offset to the stock ECU's timing (UTEC has its own ignition coil drivers). If you set 20* of timing at 30% throttle and 4500 with the UTEC it will ALWAYS be 20*. The EU can't guarantee that unfortunately.

^ ^ ^ What he said.

When datalogging the stock '99 ECU, I see wide fluctuations in ignition timing - speeding up, slowing down, no good reason - and any piggyback I know about just applies an offset to the ECU timing. This makes me nervous.

Hummmm ... this is from the 3.5 flywheel/sensor, right? ( no 350Z FSM here). Duplicating this signal would be - difficult.

Wait a second I just realized something! Old-school tuner with fuel pressure Grey99 moving up to some modern day tuning?!?!?! !!!!!!

Well, those things seem to be working OK so far ....

and if I'm gonna step up to today's technology, it will be a UTEC - if I can.

Can't do Utec, the crank/cam signals are way too different. Best bet is down grading to 96 ecu somehow and get JWT or just get the EU working 100%

Swapping out to a '96 ECU and harness is actually fairly simple, after you've done it once (I did adriena's swap from 99 to 96). I think I still have the necessary wiring changes around here somewhere...

Swapping in a A33B ECU isn't all that difficult and gives you variable valve timing and the option of using the UTEC.

For the sake of discussion, wouldn't this require changing the flywheel and re-aligning that sensor, plus all the rest of it ?? I looked and I still have a 3.0 and 3.5 automatic flywheel - the 3.5 seems to be divided into three equal zones with ten teeth each and a large blank space in between. This is a far cry from the 359 timing teeth on the 3.0 wheel.

Doesn't the A33B ECU come from an older Infinity? and does the UTEC require the cam sensor as well as the crank sensor?

A side issue - what is an Infinity Q30? I drove beside one today and the body looked just like the 95-99 Maxima body design I was wondering about engines and transmissions, but I'll bet body parts are shared..

Sure it was a Q30? I don't believe those ever existed.

I dunno - Car-Part.com just shows an I30, J30 and M30, but I sure know what a 4th gen max looks like, and that was the body style I drove behind for a couple of blocks today. I'm sure I saw the Q30 badge, and grandma driving the car, 'cause the Q30 didn't sound familiar so I watched it. But if it don't exist, it don't exist. Google doesn't know about it - do you suppose what I saw was a stylizied "I" instead of a "Q" ?? Weirdness.. Never mind..

That's what I'm thinking, the I30 'I' is in a script type font.

So to answer your question, you can swap over most of the parts no problem from this mythical beast
