Yeah, the VQ35 FSM shows a diagram of the lobes sticking outward from the heads in a certain manner. If they look anywhere close to that and you have the arrows/indicators lined up with the proper chain link, you should be in good shape.

Definitely...

if memory serves cly 1 and 4 should look like " / \" for the lobes.

Oh ok. I can't remember which cylinders I was looking at according to the FSM, but I remember the lobes looking like "\ /".

I'm still going off memory.

My fault. It's been so long since I last messed with my engine.

Here is what cyl #1 should look like on the VQ35:

So they do lean in like "/ \".

its going to make funny noises when you first start so dont be alarmed. When I fired up my 3.5 this last time is made a bad noise and a lot of ticking but it was building up oil pressure, didnt take long for it to normal out and sounds good and beefy.

But if noises dont straighten out after about a minute then I'd shiut it down. But while its running I'd keep it on jack stands and look under the car for leaks, etc.

well the tensioners run on oil pressure right? so the chain might have a bit of slack until the pressure builds right?

Nope. Once everything is in place and you start to give it a rotation, everything will tense up. It will build its pressure when the motor starts and runs, but There should be no slack on the chains when you are done and turn the motor over.

then maybe crusher just fails

it seems to me that if you are turning the motor over clockwise, the tension goes from crank to water pump to front cams to rear cams... you would pretty much only have slack if any on the tensioner, which if you hold it with your hand to prevent slack while turning it over the first few times should take care of itself amirite?

I cant tell you how many times I redid mine because I was nervous it might not be right. Just dont forget to prime the tensioners in fresh engine oil. I didnt do one of mine and its clicking pretty loud so I have to take it back out again. Its not really anything major just annoying as hell. My girl has put about 1600 miles on the engine so far and all is well.

I never do it. Car starts up a bit loud as oil pressure is building but quickly goes away. there usually is some oil still in the tensioner anyway...

You need a new timing ring, or to somehow repair the one you have.

They do not. Well, the VGs certainly don't, and I don't believe the VEs do either.

there is a link for a SARD one. I just used what was on the rail already

then hooked up my afpr. I'll remove them one day so I can truely let the afpr do its job but works fine for now...

yes thats what I'm saying there is a SARD rail adapter I've seen floating around that bolts right to the rail, then you attach your piping and run your afpr ...

Thanks for posting the details and pics on the timing. That will come in handy this week as I tear mine down (and remember to remove the two oil pan bolts

Do you need a flywheel? You can have mine for free, just pay shipping - and point me in the right direction about cams. How do the 02 3.5 motors run the HR cam sets and keep the variable intake cam. I could use a little extra lift vs my stockers.

thx

unless your doing the full swap the variable intake cam is not functional.

You are doing a full ECU swap using an 02/03 Maxima ECU most likely. So you will be able to still have variable valve timing on your intake cams. But I'm not sure if you can run the HR cams since they have variable timing on the exhaust cam as well.

Go ahead and start your own "build thread" in the All Motor section and post a few pics. People love reading those and you will have plenty of help along the way as you post questions.

Here is my full ECU swap thread with a ton of pictures in it:
http://forums.maxima.org/all-motor/5...ss-thread.html

Feel free to post in it if you have any questions.
