A friend of mine did a 3.5 swap not too long ago on an auto tranny. It started slipping within 2 weeks so he just swaped to 5 speed.

From reading streetzlegends, aaron and jimes threads it seems that heat is the cause of most auto trannys failing. So add a cooler and dont beat on it and you'll be fine.

In my opinion. teach them how to drive stick and swap it. lol

Wow lol. I think I will just stick to a 2KVI + headers + 3" exhaust and leave it at that

If you get a tranny cooler it should last longer, but it won't last forever.

Well we ran without the stock tranny cooler hooked up for most of those miles so of course it would die soon. If you get an aftermarket cooler and synthetic tranny fluid you should be good. Jime, Aaron, And Streetz trannys have lasted alot longer than mine with alot more HP.

Bump, just lookin for someone to outline all the available mods to strengthen + firm up shifts on a stock auto? I want to go 3.5 but just need to know what exactly it will take for stock reliability with a 3.5 swap on a 4th gen auto tranny.

Or maybe I will just get a cheap 5.5 gen.......

4th Gen auto trannies are pretty weak compared to the 2002+ auto trannies which were made to handle the 3.5 liter. With that said, I haven't had one issue with my auto tranny and I credit it to having an aftermarket cooler installed. I'm not running a 3.5 liter but I've abused my tranny for several years and it still shifts like new. I also believe you should add a valve-body upgrade so the shifts are more direct. That will also save your transmission by reducing the amount of slip during shifts.

Does a valve body make part throttle shifts firmer as well?

Yes. Not like when doing the resistor disconnect though.
