OBD1 or OBD2... Which is moar bettah?

If you are starting from scratch on a performance build and you get to pick if you go OBD1 or OBD2 which do you go with and why?

Is the lack of nanny gear with OBD1 easier to tune or does the added detail available in OBD2 get you more performance for less headache?

Discuss...

No sure exactly what you mean

But if i had the choice of which engine management system, and i didn't need obd2 inspection, id go full standalone. And totally remove the stock ecu.

What are you working on? VQ35 going in something?

Stand alone in this case is not possible.

Need to stick with basic management for the race series I will be in (24 Hours of Lemons) and as I am still looking for the right car w/ 5speed I can pick if I want to go OBD1 or OBD2.

As I will be ripping off a lot of stuff I fear that OBD2 may get fussy and want to throw lights and nanny things up but if I can get OBD2 to work well then I have a lot more cars to choose from and get a lot more feedback from the ECU for data gathering.

So... lets have it folks. Who has some feedback?

Imo its not hey go with obd1 or 2.

So right now your looking for a car and trying to decide on what car?

Will you be leaving the stock motor in??

There is some good stuff out there for some obd1 and obd2, but then there are some where there is not much at all.

Need more details. You could run a Vq35hr motor use a stock HR ecu, with osiris. or you could run a KA24E

If you are talking about data logging only then i think obd1 and obd2 CAN offer pretty good logging.

If you do want to go with minimal emissons and a 4th gen Maxima go with a '95 Fed Spec 5 speed ECU. The only emissons monitored electronically by that ECU is the EGR and I've had the check engine light come on for EGR during a dyno test session and there was no drop in power. The EVAP system is mechanical on the '95 Fed spec ECU (EVAP turns on whenever EGR turns on, they share the same vacuum line) and there is no MAP sensors or EVAP solenoids. Every other sensor monitored are needed to run the engine properly.

That ECU is still technically OBD-2 as are all Maxima ECUs from '95 and up.

You can tear all of the EVAP/EGR stuff off an OBDII car and all you will get is the MIL. If you rip something off and it hurts performance, it would be something important like knock sensors, etc. Primary O2's are even irrelevant because the engine will operate in open loop without them, actaully making it easier to tune for all rpms/throttle positions/MAF readings.

All you will be left with is extra hydrocarbon and NOx emissions, which don't really matter if you are racing.
