Question Max RPM with stock rods/pistons

Going to be tuning the car in a week or two, but dont know what i should set the redline to. it was recently at 7200 with a TS reflash but i want to go a bit higher. just looking for some opinions on how high i could go.

mods list:
Intake
long tube headers
equal length y-pipe
3in exhaust
JWT c8 cams
JWT valvesprings
ARP rod bolts
cometic headgaskets
ported ssim manifold or custom 'box' manifold
FIC 900's
Turboxs UTEC

i know the motor will make power passed 7500, but not sure what the bottom end will hold with just the rod bolts.

If you're spending that much money why not have the bottom end balanced? Or have a crank made with an external balancer?

the car has been running for over a year and a half now. its just never been 'tuned' to optimal performance. just ran on the TS ecu with pretty rich afr's

i'll post a vid from the track and dyno graph from last year

"Long Tube Headers" I would like more info on those.

Also can you post a dyno w/ TQ? Or get your runfiles to Nmexmax, HP has a nice usable hump, I just wonder if you have any TQ w/ it....

lol, the headers are just the 'long tube' ebay headers. nothing special.

thats all i have from that dyno. it wasnt reading the rpms so no trq numbers. but trust me, it has torque lol look at the afr's though. in the 11's and dips even more up top.

7800 would be as far as i would push it, anything further you are kinda venturing into the unknowns with out a full build. Although somebody was revving a 3.0 to 8k on stock valvetrain just because he could and didnt have problems.

Then they're not long tube headers.

And no, I have seen only 2-3 VQs w/o boost with a good amount of TQ w/ their powerband, and none on the cams you're running.

I only ask because I am researching the matter, hoping I find more people who break the mold.

yea, i really only want like 7500-7600.

got some info from a good source and he said 7700 is about the max that he'd do. so i just have to see if the power keeps rising up there or not.

One day you'll see long tube headers and realize how silly that sounds.

But let us know if you make any more changes, I would reaaallly wanna see a dyno w/ a tq graph, I have a good idea of what I it looks like but I always like to be wrong in these cases.

How much does your car weight btw (Mainly concerned on the 12.2 run you have on your youtube).

i know what real long tube headers look like. the headers im running are probably as close to long tubes as they will get for a FWD VQ without spending a ton of money for a custom set.

when i tune the car, i can post the graph.

You refer to them as long tubes when they're not, and you know they are not. I'm just being picky about semantics because someone in the future may think you have acquired the holy grail for FWD V6's, something very few platforms have (Actually, I can only think of one, the Taurus SHO's have Long Tube headers avail to them).

//Edit.

i see its a pet peeve of yours.

theres only 2 or so options besides the cattmans. the shortys and the ones im running. if they not long tubes, then idk what to refer to them as.

but enough about my headers. any other rpm info?

It's something I come across a lot when I read forum archives, I keep wasting hours of time trying to find things that never existed.

Options for headers? Plenty....

OBX for the 3.0's
OBX for the 3.5's
Cattman's
Stillen's
Custom Maxima/eBay Brand
Altima Headers+Custom Y Pipe (Best and may be cheapest)...

But I digress....

Did you do anything about balancing the lower end? Surprisingly over the vast information the interwebs haz one can only guess at the true limits of the bottom end of the VQ.

Now, I could be wrong (not something I've looked into at all), but wouldn't keeping the stock crank pulley on the VQ help you stay within a safe zone when revving higher because of the external harmonic balancer??? Yes the VQ is internally balanced but it's a V6 so it can not be perfectly balanced, will the harmonic balancer get rid of that little bit of error in the bottom end to allow it to rev to something silly high? Or should the crank be taken into consideration? Or since we're on stock pistons here should the crank be left alone because nissan balanced it out from the factory?

Rumour has it the stock rods/bolts on a DE will fail at a sustained 7200 RPM after 15 minutes - pretty sure it was the guys @ technosquare who did the tests.

For your setup, I think short drag bursts of 7500-7800 would be alright, but the valves might be starting to float at that point - and obviously there is a risk of blowing oil pumps especially w/ a stock balanced reciprocating assembly. You could always mic the heads and go up in 100 rpm increments to get a feel for the limits of your valvetrain.

I would upgrade your oil pump for sure. I am using a revup/HR oil pump in my VQ35.

As for my valvetrain, I am using HR retainers, HR springs, and double shims on each spring. I should easily be able to rev to 7700 on the drag strip. But for me, my optimal shift point has been calculated at 7300. So there is no reason for me to rev any higher until I also get my hands on some C8s!

I have stock pistons and rods as well with ARP rod bolts.

sounds good. where could i get an HR pump?

if you ever get the c8's, you'll love them! speaking of jwt cams, i called them today and the guy was going to talk to one of the engineers to see what they would recommend. he did say that the cams and springs are rated for 8200 when together!

You can call Dave Burnette at Southpoint Nissan. He'll give you a good deal on an oil pump. 1-888-254-6060

yea, Sparks made that much with the custom manifold and a real tune. take a look at those afr's, they're in the 11's. far from ideal on a NA setup. this was with the TS ecu, just always ran really rich. this is also how i ran the 12.2 @112
