head unit installation question

Hi,

Yeah I know this is a novice question, but I was wondering if anyone has a good page on headunit removal (preferably non-bose) for a 4th gen max. I have searched the archives but most the links (ie installdr) seem broken. I have taken them out of other cars before so I am hoping this one isnt too bad(however they also were column shifts not console). Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Sam

Re: head unit installation question

disconnect battery, turn key to on , pull parking brake, put shifter in neutral, pop the little plastic cover off that, pop the cover off where the a/c vent and the clock are, ashtray removes with one screw- remove it, four screws hold the entire climate control, radio, and the pocket (two at the top, two at the bottom), pull it out, two screws on each side of the radio...you usually have to remove the screws on one side of the climate control to open the metal cage enough to get the radio out....then it goes back together same way

The stereo section on www.dereckwillis.com got me through pretty easily. I was able to do it without removing the shift ****. Watch out - he's not kidding when he says those stock screws are in super-tight. I ended up having to drill three of mine out. Anyone want a Bose deck with metal shavings and one piece of threading still inside?
