How Much did you pay to replace your stereo?

I've been reading up on replacing my Bose POS, and its begining to look like more of a headache than its worth. I want to replace it with either all Pioneer or JVC+something. Aside from the cost of parts, how much did you pay to have the whole system done?

For you die hard "do it yourselfers" please tell me why its not worth it, to have someone else do it for me.

Thanks,
-Walter

The Maxima is a relatively easy car to work on. Getting to the stereo involves a little bit of work, but nothing major. If you're just changing the headunit, it should be a relatively easy job if you take your time.

Re: How Much did you pay to replace your stereo?

I have a pioneer head unit. It's great. Makes the speakers sound better. I did it all myself. Installed head unit, speakers, amps, subs. Head unit is some easy stuff. My opinion is that it's not hard to anything w/ your stereo. Just time consuming. Wiring the amps took quite a while,(took out seats, ran wires under the carpet) but I think it's worth it. It saves a good 125 bucks. Some places do offer free installation w/ purchases, and that'd be worth it. But if you're like me, you don't have the money to buy EVERYTHING you want for you stereo all at one time to take advantage of the free installation. Installing you stereo yourself not only gives you the satisfaction of doing it yourself, but experience, and teaches you how the stuff works, so if something happens to it, you can fix it yourself, instead of having to take it to a shop again.

O yeah. I got my system cheap. Look on ebay. Good deals there. I paid less than half of what the whole system costs. I put in about 700 bucks for a 2000 dollar system. Maybe more.

Eclipse 54400 = $300 installed
Boston FX6 (2 pairs) = $280 installed
-------------------------------------
Total = $580 and a pretty nice sound system

I thought I had to replace the whole system, and it wouldn't sound right if I wanted to just do the HU. I know I can by-pass the amps but would it sound right without the right "balance" or whatever that the stock HU is supposed to have?

I just did an Alpine MP3 deck and Infinity Kappa's all around. Sounds great, finally the rest of my Bose is gone. I sold off my Kenwood deck that was using an adapter with the Bose speakers to replace with the Alpine. i got everything at cost, but plan on spending some decent money to replace the Bose with anything better sounding. People will argue, but the Bose really is a nice system till things stop working. (the display, intermittent CD playing..)

Heh...if I managed to complete my installation myself, then ANYONE can. Even running wires (and getting the carpet and panels back on how they were before) was pretty easy. Just get a set of instructions w/pictures and/or good advice from someone who has a similar ride.

Does your vendor reps give you incentives, like contests to win products and such?

Not often enough. They do give me great discounts for my own car though. Actually I do get free things on occasion IF I do ALL one brand.
