I would like to add a "dirt-cheap" amp and sub to my stock non-Bose
I have a 95 with the stock, non-Bose cassette headunit (Clarion-made) and still have my factory speakers in the rear (Panasonic, 4 ohms).
I want to add a small sub to this setup to strengthen my bass just a little (I'm not really in to the killer sound system setup, just looking for a little bit more clear bass).
I have some questions which the search function didn't help me out with:
1) I can get one of those cheap 200W amps for about $30 at the store, are they any worth? (remember, I just want to drive a small sub)
2) Tube sub or box sub? If box sub, should I buy the speaker and enclosure separately or will the cheap box w/ subs they sell at the store work fine? Any recommendations on a cheap sub (and what size?)
3) To get the audio signal, I'm planning to use the speaker-line > RCA converter. I'm wondering if this hook up could cause loading issues on either the factory speaker or headunit (rated 4 ohms).
4) How do you secure the sub to the trunk floor? I'm no so keen on the whole drilling bit so are there any other alternatives?
5) With this setup, the bass level will be determined from the stock headunit, will it sound alright?
Thanks!

1) Don't get the cheap amp. You want power, but it's better to get a clean amp. By that I mean a low THD, and high Signal-to-noise ratio. My Kenwood is at 99% THD, and 98 S/N. It only pushes 4x50, but they sound allot louder.
2)Tube vs. Box is a personal issue. Do you want tight bass, boomy bass? what type of music? Buying the box altogether means it's tuned already, as opposed to you trying to do it.
3)Your speaker level > RCA should be fine, even though the RCA cables out of the headunit would be better.
4)If you don't want to secure the sub to the trunk floor. Buy a piece of plywood and mount the sub or amp to that. Then just put velcro on the other side of the plywood, and it'll stick to the floor.
5)The bass level is going to be fairly okay. Unfortunately stock radios don't put out allot of power, especially the type you want from the sub. You're probably going to end up buying an amplifier or better yet get an amplified tube or sub box.
p.s. Let me know what you do.
p.p.s. I'm selling my head unit and amp also. (not an advertisement to buy)

Thanks for the replies. I'll be going on a business trip for almost 2 months, and Michigan winters are a pain, so I won't touch this until next summer.
Oh well, gives me plenty of time to think about it

Ummmmm....your THD is 99%?!?!?!
I am hoping that was some sort of typo.
