Need response by friday

OK guys right now in my car i have 2 jl 12w3 with a jbl 600.1 amp.. i went to sound advice ( a local car stereo place) and wanted to buy 2 the new jl 10w6v2... the guys in there swear by the new jl w7 series, so i set up an appt to have them put a jl 10w7 on friday My questions are

1) they want me to drop a G on a jl 1000/1 amp, and claim my amp will barely power the sub... is this true and can any1 get me that amp cheaper

2)the 10w7 comes in this JL high output box (which hes charging me like another 150 for) is this really worth it??

3)im only getting a 10w7 bc ive had 12s and whenever u put house music or something other then rap they sound crappy(to me at least)
but for another 100 he sed hed give me the 12, should i just spring for that? like i mean is there any difference between the 2 other then 2 inches more on the woofer and the length of the bass hit?

thanks

What do you mean by "the length of the bass hit?" The difference between the ten and twelve is output and extension by being able to hit the really low notes more easilly. But it also needs a bigger box.

The JL amp is probably ten times better than the JBL. Not because of more power, but because of better power.
Maximadave can probably get you better prices on the JL stuff. If you can't build a high quality sub enclosure yourself, I would use the box they recommend.

BY the length of the bass hit i meant that in lets say a hip hop song its not repeated bass hits so the 12 is not a problem but in a house-techno song there are bunch of fast bass hits and by the time the 2nd note comes the first isnt done and its like a overlap... at least in my 100% non-expert opinion lol.... 2nd the jbl 600.1 amp that i have now, the guy claims will be outpowered by a jl 500/1 now is this true, and would it be worth it to buy that amp right off the bat or should i wait and save for the 1000/1?

The JBL600.1 is probably putting out around 700 or so watts. I have the 1200.1 and it puts out around 1400. Personally I would go with a thousand watt amp, but I'm sure you can get an equally good amp for much less money. The JBL1200.1 is only $285 at www.ikesound.com You should look at that.

The ability of a sub to react quickly is dependant on the quality of the driver and the quality and style of the enclosure. A sealed enclosure will have the best transient resonse. The size of the driver shold not affect the transient response.

An amps sound is not strictly dependant on it's power. A high quality 500 watt amp may sound much better, or even more powerful than a 600, or even 1200 watt amp. The JBL is notoriously low quality. Damping factor is horrible, as is sq. You get what you pay for when you pay less than $300 for a 1200 watt amp. Side by side the average ear can tell the difference between these amps. But the JL 1000/1 is not the only amp that is way better than the JBL. Consider the ampmanaudio revolution, 1600 watts into 1 ohm. A pair of JLW7's could be wired parallel at 1.5 ohms and would share most of the possible 1600 watts. I mean the difference between 1.5 ohms and 1 ohm is not much. Maybe a couple hundred watts.

The old alpine is a class A/B amp. It take much more power to get the same output. What I mean is that it is not as efficient as the class D and class T amps now available. I don't have any experience with the Memphis amps. I have heard them recommended a few times.

The lack of apparent quickness of the sub can also be a result of poor amplification and wiring. Make sure that the wiring is up to the task and that you have adequate stiffening capacitors. The added capacitance makes an amp more stable and react better to sudden transients.

Memphis has a good rep, but I've never heard them either. If you just want a sub amp check out the MTX class D sub amp. It will put out over 1000 watts and retails for like 700. Not a bad deal.
