Bose cd player "Cd Err" fixed with new laser?

I have a 98 maxima bose headunit and the headunit always says "cd Err" I brought it to the repair shop and they will be replacing the laser. My question is what is everyones experience with this way of fixing the problem. Does it fix it totally or is there something else they are over looking.

"bose blows" ever heard that before...bose has nice sounds, but is usually a high maintnance product...id strongly urge in looking into aftermarket HU's...it will increase the sound throughout your whole car too

Looking for an answer

The store that is fixing the headunit, I already have a $200.00 credit at the store, so I figure I'll get the unit fixed.

Let me jump in here and add this: Bose Sucks! Oops, too late!

I have a Bose HU in my '96 and its messed up. Played CDs fine for months, then decides to sart doing the "CE Err" crap, wont eject it for a couple days. Then it did, wont take any now. Ok, so I just use the radio? Then it starts changing over to CD BY ITSELF and then shuts off. Like 1-100X per trip. Man. What a picce of crud this thing is! I'd not repair it if I were you. Replace it! Quick! And get the dang amps and speakers out too! All pure *Crap* IMHO!

Any answers ?????????

I don't want anyones negitive statements about bose just trying to save money buying a entire new system. Has anyone completly fixed the "cd err" problem and what kind of fixture was done. The store that I was dealing with did not replace the laser yet it's on order from clarion. They re-lined the laser and cleaned it so far and works a little better not 100% yet. I will kept the .org posted, but plz NO NEGITIVE POSTS I ALREADY AGREE BOSE SUCKS< BUT NO MONEY TO BUY NEW SYSTEM.

Re: Bose cd player "Cd Err"

Just saw your posting, I have the Bose 'CD Err' problem as well, '96 SE. When I start the car, the radio comes on, (because it was on when I turned the car off), but then cuts out after about 20 seconds. Seems to be fairly consistent. This is when I get the 'CD Err' msg. I simply hit the FM button, the radio comes back on and no more problem until I shut the car off and start again. Of course my CD player is useless.

A couple of months ago the problem seemed to just go away. Then on a road trip to Florida, I had some books on CD to help pass the driving time, it started acting up again.

Sounds like it is time to replace the whole unit. Anyone looked into drop in replacements? I am not interested in sharing my music with the neighborhood, so I am not interested in adding amps, woofers, etc.

FWIW...

Well, FWIW I *was* trying to look for a post on this where someone had replaced the CD laser. I can't find it due to the search in maxima.org NOT allowing a 2 letter word in search! (CD) So, sorry, I tried and can't find it, and wasn't really just wanting to vent on the Blose units. Good luck. Maybe that'll fix it and it'll work another few months...

Tomorrow is the day!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow 09/03/2002 I will be getting back the 1998 bose headunit from the repair shop with a fully replaced laser. I'am hoping the "cd err" message is history, th shop says it's perfect but I will have to see for myself. Will post tomorrow again.

The Results

I picked up the headunit today the "Cd Err" problem is history. The repair shop says they repair alot of bose headunits, and problem is simply a weak laser. I tried all types of cd-r's and there were no problems with playing any of them. So if anyone wants to know why they get the message "Cd Err" it's the laser. The piece from clarion was 150.00 dollars (CDN). When talking to the shop they said it always better to order the piece and have a local repair shop replace it. The reason shipping most of the times causes the laser to be un-aligned, and therefore when received you would have to re-align the laser.

Good info

Well, thats good information. Thanks for the post. I have problems with my CD player. It will say CD Err sometimes, and work other times, and sometimes I'll be playing the radio and it switches to CD and shuts off, and other times it wont even take a CD. Sometimes when its not playing the CD it wont return it either. I really can't believe that a new laser will help with all these problems, but maybe it will help some other people.
